Equal number of mafia vs non mafia effectively ends the game, no matter the roles. That's why when I was arsonist and Khuutra was firefighter I would have won if it was me against him even though he could have protected himself ad infinitum. Same happens with mafia and non mafia

He's gotcha there. People just use the "50% mafia" because that's normally sufficient to guarantee a no-win scenario for the town. But if it went down to (let's say) 2 mafia vs. him and another townie, if they tried to kill him then he kills them instead. (Am I right that the PGN doesn't die when he retaliates against mafia?) Then the town can lynch the remaining mafia and BOOM town wins.

Or if it got down to him and one mafia ... well the mafia couldn't WIN could they?

Mmmm... So.... no one but zex likes my double lynch idea??? Well... it's 1:51am here... I'm gonna hit the sack earlier than usual tonight. Wonder how this will all look in the morning.

Notice the "so". This IMO backs up my idea that "as many mafia as town" is just a rule of thumb for when it is normally impossible for the town to win, but not necessarily always.

Gah, this was supposed to be a double lynch, and we're not getting close to it. At least, if the double lynch fails, I wanna have someone I can blame for shifting the vote last minute

That also depends on what the Mod interprets that should be done in case of a tie. For example, if there are 2 mafia vs 2 non mafia and it's day, the two mafia will vote for a town and viceversa, it's up to the mod if that will lead to a double-lynching or to a no-kill, or to a neverending day, and so on.
