Forums - Sales - S-E: NEW Wii in 2011, motion 'impact' for PS360 = SMALL!

Reading the full interview on the Financial Times, I would not take it as S-E getting behind Nintendo. (Free registration required -- see www.FT.com)

While the quoted section talks about how the Sony and Microsoft motion tech won't change much this generation, the full interview praises Project Natal and says type of control will become the new standard.

Mr Wada said he rated the technology in devices such as Microsoft’s Project Natal controller very highly. “As a user interface it’s fantastic and I think it will become standard,” he said.

He also blamed Nintendo for the drop in the industry -- year-to-year.

He attributed most of the industry’s slowdown to weaker sales of Nintendo games so far this year. In contrast to last year, Nintendo has not released many of its big titles in the first half of 2009.

Two things:

1) I think the comment ^^ is slightly rediculous. Trigger a gaming recession!? You're mad.
2) It could be possible for Nintendo to create a dual-console market for themselves. NO ONE would have thought what they did with the Wii would be possible back in the PS2's heyday.

oh, and I'm playing fable now (original xbox! wooot!), so I'm fine with making enemies. It's part of life.

i hope wada's right about the limited effect on the PS3 and 360. the last thing I need is for Sony to turn lame and start thinking that motion control is cool.

It's all about the game.

Dragon Quest X a launch Wii HD game?

He's the second CEO (Marvelous CEO) to blame Nintendo for not releasing enough games this year. I never pictured that Nintendo games were the only games that can "MOVE" the industry forward.

...Whats gonna happen next year with the 1st Party games that Nintendo plan to release, "We couldn't have any success on Nintendo's platform cause of the strength of there first party."

The Interweb is about overreaction, this is what makes it great!

...Imagine how boring the interweb would be if everyone thought logically?

I think that is plausible. Since Wii sales are slowing down, and Nintendo is forced to cut the price of the Wii, chances are this will cause their profits to suffer. What better way to increase profits than to release a new console, in a similar fashion to the Wii, where it makes money from day 1. With TV broadcasts now digital, and HDTV prices dropping each year, an HD Wii 2 seems like the perfect fit.

Nintendo is the only company that does not need to wait to recoup loses from their hardware sales. Microsoft and Sony would be hard pressed to go against Nintendo since they are both still trying to recoup their losses. A jump start to the next generation would likely mean Nintendo would "win" the next generation as well.

If they do make the unit fully backwards compatible with the Wii, it will provide consumers with an obvious upgrade path to preserve their original game collection and move up to HD.

Some good points DM. I for one would love to see Ninty go all agressive next gen. I hope they do it, but I have my doubts.

1986, 1991, 1996, 2001, 2006 notice a pattern here? For the last 20+ years Nintendo has released a new console every 5 years. They did so when they were winning and when they were losing. I know they've said they expect this gen to last longer than 5 years and that they have no plans to release a console anytime soon, but I could see them launching a successor to the Wii in 2011. Especially if millions of consumers lose interest in the Wii and HDTV's occupy the majority of homes by mid 2011. Patcher's fabled WiiHD will probably never come to fruition as I've never seen Nintendo internally upgrade or modify any of their consoles.

Actually, the original Nintendo launched in 1984 - Japan, 1985 - to limited areas in America. It saw a BIGGER launch in 1986 to more American territories and Europe.

The SNES - launched in 1990

Although I slighlty see your point, Nintendo hasn't always stuck to a 5-year release rule...

Actually, the 1-6 pattern holds true for North America. The 1985 holiday sales of the NES was NYC area only. It didn't go nationwide until 1986. http://classicgaming.gamespy.com/View.php?view=ConsoleMuseum.Detail&id=26

The NES and SNES dates are way off and a bit off the pattern -- but now it conforms. And with the worldwide launch of the Wii, everyone is at the same place at the same time.

So of course, Nintendo will release the WiicubedHD in 2012.

2012 at the latest.

I can see all other consoles releasing in 2011 though.

By the way, I do not blame Nintendo for the drop. They can't be held completely responsible for the drought of games in their system. 3rd parties are just being weird (or moving on to handhelds).

Stof raises some very good points.

I do think 2011 is too early for the Wii release.

The DS was first officially mentioned in Nov 2003. It was then released in Nov 2004. The Wii was relesed in Nov 2005.

If this pattern is the same. then it will be 2 years from the announcement of the DS2 to the release of the Wii. If the DS2 is announced tomorrow, then the Wii could be released in September 2011. If we don't hear an announcement about the DS2 before Jan 1 2010, then it will be a 2012 release

The Wii was released November 2006 not 2005. The only current generation home console to be released in 2005 was the 360. Also you are going about this in the wrong way. I doubt nintendo thinks of patterns on when they are releasing their consoles. If the DS was selling millions a month, and the Wii only a few 10k then there is no doubt in my mind the Wii would have a succesor much sooner than the DS.
