does it bother anyone other than me, the fact that a "casual" console is leading the way into the future?
i enjoy 'grown up' games... but he market is being blown away by games focused on children, women, and old people. if microsoft and sony try to copy the wii the next generation, i'll have to skip that generation or stop playing games all together.
@ leo-j
You do a lousy job of defining the 'bet'. Are you talking about overall PS3 sales to-date beating one week numbers of the Wii or XBox360?
Do you play games alone or with other people? Do you play video games with your grandma like I have? Do you play video games with your girlfriend? Do you play video games with your parents? Or is it all 'about you'?
Come now, PS3 has already copied the whole tilting-the-controller aspect of motion control. Does that mean you should stop playing games altogether in protest of a vaster majority having more fun than you?
Numbers: Checker Players > Halo Players
Checkers Age and replayability > Halo Age and replayability
Therefore, Checkers > Halo
So, Checkers is a better game than Halo.

People kept talking on how the japs love nintendo and mario.....but somehow i feel uneasy about SM:G sales over in Japan. I just seems strange to me that this current drought would be just magically ended with one game. Let's hope i'm wrong about this...anyway those who care for the games succes. |
I agree. Though I'm not really "worried" about it since i'm not really personally invested in it.

Go ahead and make a list of these extremely well selling games you are talking about which focus on children, women and old people. |
Try this out, I found out one of my favorite games, Yoshi's Story, came out on Wii VC. I looked up, out of curiosity, but not an opinion-altering curiosity,
http://ign64.ign.com/articles/150/150563p1.html
IGN's review from Matt C. I usually wouldn't notice the review itself, except the phrases:
"Cute 2 1/2D platformer with annoying sounds and music."
"Cute and annoying..."
"Formula 2D platformer. Too easy and too short."
"Only recommended for younger gamers." <------ <---------
That's one of those condemnable comments from someone who is appearing to suggest that there is a maturity difference in 'fun'. The idea that a game as non-age-defined as Yoshi's Story is good for one age and not another is blasphemy. I think I was in 9th or 10th grade of highschool when I played this game through, and found a lot to do in it. Blatant statements of games being for kids is what most of the gaming world is resulting to.
Is bowling really so non-20-year-old? Is Manhunt really geared towards 5 year olds and 80 year olds? Metroid? For kids-only? RE4 for kids only? (a great use of the Wiimote, actually)......

Anyone who has a Wii and has not played Mario64 ever should really do so. This is a very different game-type, similar to a platformer, but intelligent and quite literally alone on its control feel. Not to mention the first truly 3D console game ever released (fact as I know it to be).
Mario Galaxy is heralded as the spiritual successor to Mario64, and if it has that title, and you have played Mario64 before, then yes, the hopes are rightfully high.

If by casual you mean "fun without being intrusive in your life to the point where you become a loner". Then yes I am very happy about the Wii leading the way into the future.
I enjoy 'grown up' games on my Wii and on my PC, I get plenty of games that focus heavily on violence and I get plenty of games that are just about leaving a smile on your face. In the end I have a good variety which leads me to my next point.
What I got out of your post was an extreme intolerance for ANY deviation from the standard mold of what makes a video game. But what I see right now is the Wii having a good mix of what is considered to be within that mold and other titles that are outside that box.
In the end however this comes down to economics. And while there very well might be an explosion of the casual game market it in no way means the end of the "grown up" market you love so much.
The simple fact is this, the "grown up" market as you call it IS profitible and so long as that is the case you will see companies like Sony, Nintendo, and MS willing to invest money to tap into that market. The up side here is that while this market may end up being the smaller of the two it is still the far more established market and I don't think that developers are going to lose sight of what you want just because their company is involved in a different market.
I don't think it'll end so soon. I'd give it 7 months before it starts to slow down. This holiday for the Wii will only get screwed over by the shortage. WiiFit pretty much has Japan sales. And Galaxy will help make sure Wii keeps sold out till Brawl and WiiFit come to NA.
PS3 price cut will help them out but it still won't match Nintendo's WW sales I don't think. It'll be upthere with Wii's Japan sales, depending how big of a hit Galaxy is.
For Xbox.. hmm Halo/Bioshick/all of the other shooting games.. will take the hardcore gamers this holiday for NA. As expected by all.
Who can identify these numbers. They are relevant to this discussion, and somehow very knowledgeable posters have chosen not to discuss these. The current sales in Japan fall in line with a pattern. That is apparently independent of the performance of the other two consoles.
The Wii has lost over two thirds of its sales volume in just two months. Thats a impressive decline in sales. For two months Wii sales have slipped week after week. Should make even the ardent fan ask if the Wii is the end all and be all of gaming how could it have sacrificed so much volume.
There is a difference between selling five thousand less units and selling fifty thousand less units even if the margin denoted in percentages is the same. There is some valid discussion to be had here. I would love to read more analysis, and less belly aching.
Basically the assumption seems to be well its that time of the year, and that may well be part of it. However does that mean that demand might not also be falling. Remember this was a very hard to get item if people were trying to get it for months why aren't the units still being snatched up at a much higher level.

Nintendo's preparing for the transformation and shedding of the bad karma of the past 11 years. Once cleansed the TRUE Nintendomination will begin. When TRUE Nintendomination begins the efforts you see from the competition will not be even close like they were in the 1st phase. XBox 360 won't be seen as a contender and PS3 will be totally engulfed. Nintendo led by far only in its "larval stage". Once this creature blooms out to butterfly people will be absolutely SICK of seeing Nintendo on the charts. Hardware and software worldwide by large margins sometimes without any competition in the top 10 at ALL. Maybe not even in the top 20. Nintendo hasn't even gotten started yet, bruh. I don't know what YOU talkin' 'bout. When it happens you will look back on 2007 as a faint glimmer compared to the blinding light that you see in the next coming years. They haven't finished transforming the industry yet and some of the old-rules contenders still have a chance. Once Nintendo completes the circle it's NES all over again. I said it many times before. Wii is the 2nd coming of the NES, the Famicom, the Family Computer. In every possible inference you can gather from that. Sales, cultural impact, industrial influence, profit margins, whatever. 2007 is the last year where Nintendo will seem like an equal to the competition. You haven't seen anything yet. Prepared to get your mind blown. John Lucas |
I feel like I went to John Lucas church of Nintendo thanks for that empowering speech.... or say sermon
