I doubt we will see this. The last thing M$ wants to do is create another RROD by making things smaller.

Well I should think that if Microsoft saw benefit in reducing the size of the 360 then they would be restructuring it in away that would hopefully nuetralize RROD anyway.
I think the biggest question is would it be worth Microsoft's time, money and effort to completely redesign the 360. What exactly would they gain? Well, they would have yet another excuse to "relaunch" the console for a 3rd or 4th time and they would probably reduce the cost of the system by decreasing the amount of plastic as well as the shipping costs with smaller, lighter packages. Would it be worth the development costs of redesigning it though? The 360 isn't selling at a complete loss like the PS3 is so is it really in Microsoft's best interest? As far as I know, Japan is the only market that really cares that much about the size of a console, but in all honesty Japan is all but a lost cause for 360 anyway.
No i think they don't need a slim at all.

No. All due respect but making things smaller is just not the American thing
lol

Original PS3, inside has basically no space inside, and in the slim, none. What sony does right is design this stuff for a few reasons, they know how to cool. The heat sink inside the PS3 is almost 1/3rd of the original PS3, with a HUGE fan at lower RPM, bigger fan at lower RPM does same job as a smaller fan at higher RPM and makes much less noise. What Microsoft did, was use smaller heatsinks, smaller fans, and a lot of "venting room" this is PC logic, not console logic. They also put the GPU originally underneath the DVD drive, and used heat pipes to direct excess heat from GPU into CPU heat sink thinking that would WORK. It does, however thats where RROD came from. RROD could of easily been fixed, the heat sinks for both CPU and GPU are to small, and the GPU didn't even have a fan on it's heatsink, just heat pipes bringing excess heat to CPU heat sink. They fixed that, moved GPU and CPU, bigger GPU heat sink and I think it even has its own fan now. However that is not enough. What the 360 should of been, is the CPU and GPU being an inch apart, and the heat sink being the area from DVD drive, to the end of the console. The heat sink could of been about 1/2th inch think aluminum fans, with a single fan for cooling, with heat pipes distributing heat. This would cause all overheating problems to be almost null, with this, and a smaller DVD drive, the original 360 could of been almost 2/3rds the size it is now, in thickness. There is also no reason the power supply couldn't of been included in that same size. Right now, if they wanted to go slim version, they could of shrunk heat sink etc due to 32 nm tech, and the 360 has no reason it could be half the size it is now, WITH the power supply in it. However why didn't they do that? Cost mostly, microsoft is so cheap they removed a 0.5 cent piece of rubber from the dvd drive, which stops the DVD from hitting the laser, to save money. This is the reason that if you move the 360 with a dvd in it, it'll make a circular ring around destroying the disc. You could of took the console, and shook it when it was on, if they didn't remove a HALF CENT PIECE OF RUBBER. So chances of slim are very slim, unless they can save on production cost, and by the way microsoft do things what they are going to do is shrink CPU and GPU, shrink heat sinks, and leave console same size. |
I agree with 99% of this post. Just not the bolded. Anyone thats built or even the majority of people that semi-frequently upgrade PCs could have designed a more stable console then Microsoft. I have no idea how they managed to screw up on the design so badly. I personally think they should have included an extra vent with a large low speed fan on the side directly above the CPU/GPU and heatsinks.
Microsoft make a console smaller? Thats the biggest LOL i've heard this generation
"...the best way to prepare [to be a programmer] is to write programs, and to study great programs that other people have written. In my case, I went to the garbage cans at the Computer Science Center and fished out listings of their operating system." - Bill Gates (Microsoft Corporation)
"Hey, Steve, just because you broke into Xerox's house before I did and took the TV doesn't mean I can't go in later and take the stereo." - Bill Gates (Microsoft Corporation)
Bill Gates had Mac prototypes to work from, and he was known to be obsessed with trying to make Windows as good as SAND (Steve's Amazing New Device), as a Microsoft exec named it. It was the Mac that Microsoft took for its blueprint on how to make a GUI.
""Windows [n.] - A thirty-two bit extension and GUI shell to a sixteen bit patch to an eight bit operating system originally coded for a four bit microprocessor and sold by a two-bit company that can't stand one bit of competition.""

When I said PC logic, I meant giving plenty of room for ventaltion. PCs have a huge amount of room inside, that is not needed, but in PCs is because you need to be able to custimize, and have room for ventalation. 360 you can't swap parts, they should be no room, etc.
I doubt it. first off the chips are set for dropping to the 45 NM process late next year so 32 NM wont happen till 2011 at the earliest. Besides that a slim probably wont happen because its not that big of a selling point. Slim consoles really dont matter to alot of people. the important part is the price drop they usually accompany
Long Live SHIO!
sony will have ps3 slim 2.0 like they did PSP.
360 should be already 45nm, sony managed to pull it off, if they don't well.
microsoft its not mainly a hardware company, sony managed to pull it off because they have done it before, not only that, they are one fo the top companies it doing so along with samsung, panasonic, and lg.
microsoft have the money to do it, but they will want to invest into better build console? story tells me that won't happen.
just like they killed the first xbox.
didn't MS said there wont be any slim version of 360 not long ago?
