Anybody who's whined about the controls in this game is nuts.  If a jump is tricky to make, then blow it up with a grenade, or fly over it in a jetpack.  You really have to have absolutely no imagination to have a problem with it.

Well, I am nuts, but beside that point there is definitely a problem with the controls, and it is something that 5th cell could EASILY have fixed if they had put a little thought into it.  The problem with the controls is not in getting Maxwell to do something.  It's in getting Maxwell NOT to do something.

For instance, you are trying to pick up a small match.  You miss by 1 billionth of an inch and Maxwell decides to go to the match instead.  When he's on the other side of a lake of lava, that's quite a nuisance.  Same is also true with the keyboard.  My keyboard will click multiple times sometimes when I'm trying to type in the letters, so I end up having to use delete a lot more than should be necessary.  And even though I have very good handwriting while using the game, it somehow never interprets my N right.  I have to write an H, and then I get an N instead of an H.

They could have easily improved this game by making the stylus select items / scroll the viewpoint and made the dpad + buttons control Maxwell (fine tuned control rather than just leaving it up to his own devices to get there).  That would mean that if you didn't manage to pinpoint exactly the item you were trying to pick up, the most it will do is move the camera.

The AI is dumber than rocks when it comes to navigating Maxwell.  He can't figure out how to go down if he has to go right 1 step, down, and then left 1 step.

So plenty of room for improvement.  But that's my ONLY complaint about the game.  Otherwise, it's a very fun game.  Some of the levels are very challenging, and I totally love trying out different interactions to see what happens (love the cupid arrow idea).  But fun is based on your level of imagination.  There are some people who just would not get any fun out of this because it won't summon either of the two ideas they have:  Pen!s and b00b.

Well yeah, that would have been a MUCH better control scheme. I really hope this game does well enough to get a sequel, and that the sequel has that control scheme along with versus and co-op multiplayer of any sort.

I literally just made shit on the main screen for the first hour of playing the game. Yes it's a sometimes flawed experience thanks to the controls, but hell, this game has singlehandedly restored my faith in/passion for gaming. THIS is what a game should be: unique, fun, innovative.
Why aren't there more games that like this?

Crusty VGchartz old timer who sporadically returns & posts. Let's debate nebulous shit and expand our perpectives. Or whatever.

You should be warned, guys, the game isn't quite as good as it sounds. The challenges (the bulk of the game) aren't really fun at all so far. imo, of course.

@ rubang

Have you tried typing in 'lol wut'? The result may surprise and disappoint you.

We are up to what 7 pages now filled with quirky posts and wierd stories? Have you thought that just maybe your one of the few that doesn't fit in model of game style that SN provides?

I personally like Medusa and eventually a mirror. Also a priest with cross and holywater is uber against a vampire.

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.

Shrink Ray makes everything fun now...

Former something....

My new favorite thing is putting a land mine beside things and then luring them over it with some bait. I just blew up a bunch of mice with landmines and cheese. Great times I tell ya.

lol landmines >< i gotta try that lol. i put 2 fires not so far from eachother then an animal in between and 1 of the fires scares them then they turn to run then the other one scares them in an never ending cycle... lame lol. but i put the fires a little closer and the animal basically jumps into the fires and kills itself... talk about insanity lol

edit

There's so many ways to have fun in this game. One of the funniest I saw was setting up a hippie with a chainsaw and a lumberjack with an axe, then put a tree between them. Needless to say, the hippie won. Or making an entire coven of witches and then putting a threat in front of them. They'll accidentally zap each other into frogs and eat one another.

But the most ridiculous was what I did last night: I made 4 Maxwell clones and 3 games, plus a donut. They kept stealing the games from each other and tossing the donut around like a ballistic rocket. Eventually, one of them got pissed off enough to attack his fellow clones, and they basically killed each other off. Fun times.
