I also think 12 is way to young to make this kind of decision. The parents should have waited.

uhh, I think any age is too young to make a decision like this. This is way beyond natural in any sense of the word and rather weird and disturbing. |
i wish i could report you for this, it seems like quite a closed-minded thing to say, especially in a day and age when people are free to make decisions regarding their own bodies
you might find it wrong for whatever reason but thats no ustification for you to term it "weird and disturbing" for anyone of any age to do it.
OT, i think 12 is definitely young, for physiological and emotional reasons. but the parents clearly know the maturity level of their own child, and if its something he'd been talking about for years it doesnt sound like he chose to do it on a whim. i believe the body is just a tool, to be looked after and used, and some people have the wrong gender of body assigned to them at birth. there's no reason why that shouldn't be corrected if it can be.
(i used to get weirded out by stuff like this, i thought it was disgusting too. then i grew up).
What you guys don't understand is he wasn't too young, he was almost too old.
If the parents waited he could have grown to be more masculine, which is bad for his interests/goal.
wtf ? at the age of 12? thats insane i wont be suprsed if he changes his mind in few years/months
Starting at such a young age probably has its benefits with having the child accepted as a women as an adult (I've known of a couple of people who have done this in their 30s and it is not a pretty sight), and I don't consider this nearly as selfish as an adult with children and a wife who decide to go through with this, but I think this is a very young age to do anything that is permanent.
With that said, I do think that it is rather odd that gender reassignment seems to be the only area where people seem unwilling to tell people to learn to accept themselves for the person they are and to try to find a way to be happy.
Thats a big decision for such a young person. I wasn't responsible enough to decide what to eat for dinner when I was 12.

What about fat people? No one tells them to find a way to be happy fat,
People with tumors? No one tells them to build neck muscle to support their giant blob.
People who feel they are the wrong gender are the same.

Intolerant of opinions, aren't you?
It's NOT a close minded thing to say. All have opinions and are entitled to them. Unless Nord is going to go cause problems for this family, he's entitled to believe whatever he wants to.
When I was 12, I told all my friends I wanted to be an astromer. I had told them for years. I never became an astronomer, because it ended up passing out of my system. Why and how should a 12 year old be able to make a decision that will affect them for life? I really don't see why this was and is a smart decision. Are the parents free to do this? Absolutely. But that doesn't mean that I shouldn't be free to say they are irresponsible for listening to the whims of their child.
I just hope that if this really takes place with the child, that this is what he really, really, really wants. Because if this isn't the case, it may ruin his life.
Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Horrible example Wessel.
There are MANY people out there that are empowering fat people to stay fat. Heck, there was even a much-hyped TV show which was essentially a plus-sized bachelor which was to encourage fat people and their fattness.
Furthermore, I don't get the tumor example. How the heck does a deadly tumor equate with gender assignment or fat?
Back from the dead, I'm afraid.
