Starting at such a young age probably has its benefits with having the child accepted as a women as an adult (I've known of a couple of people who have done this in their 30s and it is not a pretty sight), and I don't consider this nearly as selfish as an adult with children and a wife who decide to go through with this, but I think this is a very young age to do anything that is permanent.
With that said, I do think that it is rather odd that gender reassignment seems to be the only area where people seem unwilling to tell people to learn to accept themselves for the person they are and to try to find a way to be happy.
