Forums - Sony - Blu-ray Players are overtaking DVD players....basically BD is taking over

OP: You have zero proof to back up your claims. Revenue of Blu-Ray could be higher than DVD revenue. Overall DVDs are still selling a lot more sales volumes than Blu-Rays. Blu-Ray discs retail for around $29 each. DVDs retail for $5 each.

The DVD player market is around 10 times the market of Blu-Ray players. Assuming 500 million DVD players have been sold there is probably only 50 million Blu-Ray players that have been sold. 10 to 1 difference in players on the market. DVD players have been around for about 12 years. Blu-Ray players have been around for only 4 years.

To give everyone a more realistic outlook. This is American figures I'm about to post. Barein mind the site states similar to VGChartz that the figures are only as good as the sources.

Now this is actual software % of sales of films right now. Between Blu Ray and DVD.

Sep 6th 2009: Blu Ray = 11%        DVD = 89%

Obviously the actual film sales speak for themselves. And have been declining all year. Dont be fooled, BluRay is really struggling. And these film sales are why the prices remain sky high.

Isn't this based off of the top 20 titles? The actual marketshare is subtantially lower if you were to includes the thousands of titles not in the top 20. Also there are blank media sales which I'm sure dvd completely dominates.

But subbing in older films cannot be classed as marketshare. Why???

Becasue say for instance a film thats been around on DVD for 10 years. It gets released on Blu Ray in 2 weeks time. You would have to account all the DVD sales of the same movie over it's release to see the marketshare total. In other words the only ones purchasing the Blu Ray version are those adopting it. Hence those that haven't still own the DVD. If done correctly like that ALL Blu Rays will suffer a major blow in marketshare.

Taking films released recently together on both DVD and Blu Ray which the site does, gives an accurate reading of what the consumer is interested in right now. And that isn't Bluray clearly. It's actually declining in America. I will be interesting to see this next year with DD added in to.

@selnor

what those numbers also dont show is total media sales and DVD are way down from last year while Blu-ray is way up from last year. Plus earlier this year they changed the way they track the Blu-ray to DVD sakes ratio. They went from revenue of the Top 20 to total revenue for the week. you should take a look at the Blu-ray sales tracking thread I have been updating on vgchartz. Cause to say that Blu-ray is struggling is just being mis-informed.

Not trying to be negative and all, because I love my Blu-Rays but (yawn) wake me when it penetration hits 40%, until then DVD is not going anywhere.

How would you account for on-demand services like Hulu and Netflix? They don't actually sell content, however they do influence buying behavior. For example, I have no desire to purchase television series anymore because I can rewatch them any time I want on-demand.

Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

I explined why it's innacurate to take in the whole Blu Ray range in my above post. Same week releases for DVD and Blu Ray is declining in marketshare for BluRay. It's the only accurate guage. It is not accurate to include sales of films on BluRay as they are only at most 4 years old. Whereas DVD's will be 12+ years old at the most. If you cannot see why it's inaccurate to take all BluRay media into marketshare analysis then there is no point continuing further with my discussion.

Films released side by side right now in the top 20 ( which is how Blu-raystats work ) is the only way to guage current marketshare of public buying Blu Ray films.

Blu Ray owners are buying back catalogs. Whereas DVD owners already own them. Thats where your thread has a problem.

Yes I agree. Since Netflix on 360 has been available in America, new Bluray film releases over the last year have taken a decline in marketshare. Is this due to HD being available on 360 via Netflix and Live? Maybe. Will being able to fully buy films on Live this year be a further factor? maybe. Hopefully now you can buy of Live they will factor that onto marketshare next year for America to.

Feature films I can see some people wanting to collect, tv shows on the other hand I see both dvd and blu-ray losing out. For example, I bought the first season of Heroes because I wanted to rewatch it. However since then, every season has been available online and I don't feel I need to repurchase. A big part of the DVD industry has been tv shows. However with the advent of on-demand, I think that market will evaporate. Those are sales that blu-ray may never get and dvd will lose.

@Paperdiego

"i hope this means the the prices of Blu-rays will come down now. seriously $29.99 is way to much for a standard Blu-ray..."

I don't buy Aussie BD's much. I do however spend $1000 on U.S copies. I just pick up stacks for $9.99, cheaper than most DVD's. The average U.S price now is $15, very resonable!
