| steven787 said: Read this book. Everybody should. Most importantly the point is moot: Casual gamers are going to play less and casual games are going to be played less than core. What matters is that the casual market keeps the bloated carcass of core gaming afloat. Next, the precise value given. When ever you see some odd or complex statistical statement (multiple variable: Wii ownership, playtime, last played, competitive market, new users) there are often too many factors influencing users answers and interviewers interpretation. I am pretty sure that the interviewed has little to no knowledge or consideration of other factors: total household use, channel time usage, total household time spent thinking about using the product (which any gamer knows how much this influences future purchases) Last here, but not for the sake of statistical argument, people who do surveys do not reflect the true population. Internet surveys get a closed audience who answers to prove a point and phone surveys... well, who really answers their home phone anymore? I'll tell you who, people who are so lonely that they can't wait for the next pollster or telemarketer and people who are so completely out of touch with the reality of wireless communication that they refuse to let the wired phone go... like my internet company who forces me to have a phone (which I don't even have plugged in). |
Don't forget cheap-asses like me. I pay nothing for my land line (literally, I have an account from work) so I try to avoid using the cell.
Anyway, Japan needs some more games, but I still don't think it's panic time. If the current situation continues through the rest of the year, then it's time to worry.
If we assume these sats have any merit, this isn't really a surprise. Wii Sports sold a lot of systems to people who wouldn't normally want a video game system and aside from Wario Ware and Brain Age (both very over priced IMO) and Mario Party 8, all of which are now old news, there has been nothing to cater to this new found crowd, who as noted above, are casual gamers at best anyhow.
But this is where WiiFit comes in, then Wii Music, then Wii motorsports... Eventually 3rd parties will start catering to this crowd too and there won't be long periods without games for this crowd anymore.
Can this be any more vague?
I am a PC gamer, and also have a NDS now, but without access to a Nintendo Wii until End of 2007.
Currently playing: Super Smash Brothers Brawl(Wii), Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer(DS), Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime (DS), WiiFit(Wii)
Games Recently Beaten: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King (Normal; Very Hard after the next DLCs become available)

Some quick thoughts
First, has Metroid Prime 3 hit Japan yet? It has a listed release date of Oct. 26 according to VGChartz. Without that in circulation, there has not been a release of merit there in a while.
Two, it is doubtful that the early rate of Wii playing in Japan could continue. Remember just a few months ago it was being blamed for lower TV ratings.
Third, the lower price for a Japanese Wii in Europe could be caused by (a) slow sales in Japan because of the seasonal, pre-holiday software drought and/or (b) the increased value of the Euro vs. the Yen (the Yen is falling to the US Dollar, which is falling against everything else).
Fourth, there are days that go by when I don't play my Wii -- or any of my 30 game systems. So on occasion it could be said that I haven't played "in a while" -- whatever that means. But that does not mean that I won't play it soon, which is the conclusion of this flawed survey (I don't need to point out its unscientific nature).
Fifth, there are still people who don't "get" the Wii. It is seeking a different demographic with different playing habits and tastes. That means all the old rules don't apply (or apply as well or as often). And change is difficult for those with vested interests in the status quo (pubilshers, reviewers, etc.) to handle.

PS -- On a bad week, the Wii still seems to outsell the PS3 by (close to a) 2:1 margin and outsell the PS3 and Xbox 360 combined. How this is not perceived as being successful really makes you wonder.
I am Mario.I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble. Wii Friend Code: 1624 6601 1126 1492 NNID: Mike_INTV |
Without knowing exactly who they sampled and what questions were asked, it's hard to vouch for the viability of these statistics.
they need wiifit now...

X360: Spider Man
PS3: Resistance: Fall of Man
Even if we assumed this number was accurate (Which dozens of people have already suggested it isn't) wouldn't that mean 1.2 Million Japanese Wii owners haved used thier Wii "of late". Which is pretty much the PS3's install base in Japan, and about triple the 360's? And that's not even considering what thier % of people not playing them "of late" is.
