VOD and features like this are the future, that's not to say that physical medium doesn't have a place in that future, it just won't be the biggest part of it. VOD is already destroying the physical rental business it's only a matter of time until it surpasses the physical ownership business as well.

You guys are missing the beauty of Instant On movie purchases. You purchase the movie and it is tied to your Windows Live id. So now, you can instant watch your purchased movie from anywhere you have a browser or your 360 profile. No need for the full download. You do not have to have the movie on your XBox HD. Anytime you want to watch the movie, stream it.

Remember this is more tied to the Zune Marketplace than it is to the 360. The 360 is just another outlet to view instant on movies outside of the Zune software.

Your movie purchase is basically a toggle switch in the cloud.

But the option to fully download is there as well.

But some of us aren't Microsoft slaves...

Hackers are poor nerds who don't wash.

The more digital distribution there is the better!! I don’t want to worry about disc’s being scratched. I don’t want to have some big collection of cases sitting there on a shelf getting dusty. I have moved twice in the last 4 years and I hate moving all my DVD’s and Video Games. If my friends want to watch something well COME ON OVER!! Its more fun hanging out anyway than loaning out stuff you paid for.

The quality is important but streaming Netflix from my 360 is still pretty good. Does it equal up to my Dark Knight Blu-Ray? Oh hell no!! But for convenience it sure does.

I checked thru the first 5 pages of this thread, so forgive me if this has not been mentioned.

This is with surround sound, right? Well there's surround sound as in Dolby Digital and DTS, and there's surround sound as in True HD DD and HD DTS and Lossless sound codecs. Big difference. Not only do these sound codecs sound much better, assuming you have a modern amp, but I am pretty sure they are HDMI 1.3a or higher dependent. 360's have HDMI 1.2 so you will be restricted to DVD quality sound.

Also, much has been discussed about the bitrate already. Suffice to say, the modern codecs on Blu-ray like H.264 and VC-1 (an MS made codec) are pretty well pushing the limits of compression. VC-1 is better for more compressed bit-rates. H.264 at a high bit rate is meant to look better. Of course, they are variable.

At the end of the day, the higher the bit-rate, the better the quality, especially in fast moving scenes. VOD will not deliver BD quality for years but for your average Joe, they see the marketing, "HD" and assume. A bit like high megapixels marketing when it comes to Digi cameras. Compare an SLR pic at 4mp to a point and shoot at 12mp, and I bet you the SLR will kill it. Why? one, compression, two - optics.

If you are pedantic about quality, stick to BD. If you are not and don't mind that model of DRM, then go VOD. Personally, I prefer to physical media and the quality :), but that's just me. I think VOD has it's place too.

Even though "Joe" is part of my real name, I'm glad I'm not one of the "average."  I love my HD audio.  I just need to buy some Klipsch to exploit it even further.

Discs can get scratched, and data can become corrupt and lost.  But what about "COME ON OVER" to someone elses house with YOUR copy?  Reasonably, it cuts both ways.
