Forums - Gaming Discussion - Japanese standoff: [PS3 vs Wii] Holidays Edition

All these release dates are brought to you by Dengeki, and I do not guarantee they are 100% correct, although I will say the site is as reliable as you can get. Also I might not know the names at all, so I will just give a description of those games.

With both PS3 and Wii being close in YTD sales for 2009 over there in Japan, I decided I would do a list of upcoming games by platform and month until the end of 2009, and based on this you should decide who will have the bigger edge at the end. Bets with Conegamer:

Pandora's Tower will have an opening week of less than 37k in Japan. (Won!)
Pandora's Tower will sell less than 100k lifetime in Japan.

Me too. I think it would be much better to adopt a cat and make funny videos of him.

I'd say September and October go to the PS3, November to the Wii and December still undecided. If NSMBWii is a December title it will be close, otherwise Sony should win that month with FFXIII.

Good summary Trestres.

Although I think the PS3 has a much improved line up over previous years, and finally has a more appealing (to the Japanese market) hardware design, I still think Nintendo have the advantage here. Wii Fit Plus may invigorate sales (though it will not have the massive effect the original did) and will add some strength to weekly sales in the long run. I genuinely think NSMB Wii is the game to push the Wii in Japan and worldwide-I think Nintendo have (at least) a massive marketing campaign planned for this game, and possible hardware bundles.

Wii will come out on top, but not by a massive margin. FFXIII is the game that will push PS3 close to Wii for the period. Even if it just has a massive opening week, it'll push it close to Wii's overall sales for the few months. In terms of home consoles, it will definitely be the most competitive period in Japan for quite some time.

Don't forget GT5 because it seems that it will be released this year. It will be really close race this year between PS3 and Wii. (In Japan obviously)

Seems to me like the average Wii title is more likely to appeal in Japan than the average PS3 title, though the PS3 offsets that purely with FF, and also with the growing possibility of December GT5

NSMBWii could be December in Japan, since their holiday season runs differently and doesn't have the critical juncture of Black Friday to worry about, so Nintendo could place it at a more optimum time for their holiday season, whereas here they more or less have to get it out the door before Thanksgiving.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

I just see it as all about FFXIII (& GT5 if it comes out this year) vs. NSMB Wii

I think Wii has a small edge. I see there at least 4 games on Wii that should sell over 300k (5 if Tales of Graces releases in December) and 3 games for PS3, if you count GT5 of course.

Depends on whether or not Wii gets a price cut, and when. Also depends on how well PS3 holds it's price cut/slim increase. I would say the Wii would win either way, but by how much depends on these factors. It could be anywhere from edging it out to dominance.
