Forums - General - Former Pres. Jimmy Carter: Wilson comments 'based on racism'

because trying to get more people healthcare, is of course the first step towards genocide?

seriously, what the fuck? I understand (just about, though i strongly disagree) your ecenomic reasons for not liking his plans, but to claim they will result in millions of people dying seems completley insane to me.

The point with respect to this thread, is that's why I don't like his policies, not because he is black. We can ague over if my views are right or not, but those are my views.

As for a justification as to why I think this....

Look at the advancements in the medical field over the last 100 years. Look at what 5% of the population of world (the US) vs the rest of the world, and what they have discovered.

Over the last 100 years, the US has discovered probably 10 fold what everyone else combined has. My question to you, is why? Do you think people in the US are somehow smarter then the rest of the world? I sure don't. The reason is our form of government is different then the rest of the world. The free market system in the US... the only one in the world of it's kind... promotes this kind of innovation.

If 100 years ago, the US ran things like every other country ran things, we would have innovated at the same rate every other country did. If we had, how many millions of people would not be alive today without the medical breakthroughs the US provided. If Obama had gone back in time, and passed this healthcare bill 100 years ago. Millions more people would have died over the last 100 years, and years to come.

I don't want someone in 100 years looking back at this moment, and say "that's the day the medical advancements died"

I watched Obama's speech the other day, and one of the things he wanted to fix, and he said he hated, is he hates knowing that a mother somewhere in the US has to tell there child "there's something out there that will fix you, I just can't afford it". He wants that to never happen in a future US. If he gets his way, he will be right. Because in 50 years, when that boy comes down with something, that drug won't exist to fix him. No one will have invented it yet.

While he is true there is racism in some people, no doubt, I think it's wrong to call "the overwhelming majority" racist. I really can't understand how people can disrespect the presidency so much. Bush got it, now obama. I mean come on guys, being president is a TOUGH job. And don't think I didn't see the "hitler gave good speeches to" sign.

Me and a mate were discussing before what a publicly run pharmaceutical would be like.

Problem with the pharmaceutical industry is that when they come up with a nifty new product (which by law only they can make) people need it - really really need it. Therefore they can charge whatever the hell they like for it.

A public non-profit pharmaceutical company would be able to focus on diseases which are more harmful but less profitable and turn out drugs at cheaper prices.

It seems like it could really lower the huge healthcare costs in America.

One already exists.

You do realize that the cost for a firm to develop a new drug and bring it to market is between $500 Million and $2 Billion, companies have to build larger and larger profits to cover for the eventual class action lawsuits which can cost up to $2 Billion, and drugs are targeting rarer and rarer conditions (meaning there are fewer drugs being sold to make up these costs). Under these conditions what makes you think that a drug company has the choice to charge a lower price for drugs to market?

Now, I know some people think that the government should take over but (in general) the government has an awful track record when it comes to research and development. The government has difficulty focusing and prioritizing when it comes to research and development because there really is no incentive for them to develop the product which meets the greatest need at a given time; whereas a private company can sell the most of a product at the highest price if it fills the greatest need at a given time.

Drug costs could be greatly reduced if the upfront costs of R&D were more distributed throughout the western world and Americans didn't pay the bulk of the costs though; but that is the side effect of so many countries having government run medicine which tends to only pay for established treatments to keep costs low.

You probably don't need more then one or two.  The way the company works it's much more efficent then the kind of stuff your talking about.

Since this one basically just facilitates a way for drug companies to give away the drugs they've developed but can't make a profit on.  These guys develop cures for stuff that won't really benefit them all the time... they develop something they think would cure one thing... and in reality it looks like it cures something else less profitable.

It's just the costs FDA testing and advanced testing will hurt the company so they have to shelve it... until these guys have come along.

Companies like this in general are amazinginly generous if you can get the tools in place to set it up to exploit them.

It's like how Food banks work so well.  For profit buisnesses donate tons of food to them.

Set up the tools and the companies will come to you with their excess of stuff they can't use... or even stuff they can use for markets they can't sell too because they wouldn't make a profit.

A company would rather give away a million anti-malaria shots to africa rather then sell them for a minor profit.

Yeah. He talks as though the last eight years of ramped up rhetoric never happened, so people's anger must all be down to racism.

MSNBC is such garbage. No wonder they have such dismal ratings.
