Me and a mate were discussing before what a publicly run pharmaceutical would be like.

Problem with the pharmaceutical industry is that when they come up with a nifty new product (which by law only they can make) people need it - really really need it. Therefore they can charge whatever the hell they like for it.

A public non-profit pharmaceutical company would be able to focus on diseases which are more harmful but less profitable and turn out drugs at cheaper prices.

It seems like it could really lower the huge healthcare costs in America.

One already exists.

Awesome. More shit like that is needed in this world.

You probably don't need more then one or two.  The way the company works it's much more efficent then the kind of stuff your talking about.

Since this one basically just facilitates a way for drug companies to give away the drugs they've developed but can't make a profit on.  These guys develop cures for stuff that won't really benefit them all the time... they develop something they think would cure one thing... and in reality it looks like it cures something else less profitable.

It's just the costs FDA testing and advanced testing will hurt the company so they have to shelve it... until these guys have come along.

Companies like this in general are amazinginly generous if you can get the tools in place to set it up to exploit them.

It's like how Food banks work so well.  For profit buisnesses donate tons of food to them.

Set up the tools and the companies will come to you with their excess of stuff they can't use... or even stuff they can use for markets they can't sell too because they wouldn't make a profit.

A company would rather give away a million anti-malaria shots to africa rather then sell them for a minor profit.
