Regarding profits, both Sony and MS suck at being console makers. They should both take notes from Nintendo, which was winning even when loosing (as in making profit, which is kinda the whole point here).
I think having 3 different platforms is bad for us consumers and that one of them will drop the console making business. While this gen is somehow acceptable because x360 and PS3 are similar in performance (therefore they share many games), if every manufacturer develops distinctively different control scheme for the next generation of their consoles, porting will be difficult and that would mean that the consumer would have to purchase three consoles to enjoy all the best of gaming in that generation.
