lol how cute. They think the DS hasn't had a price cut.

Well, the only price cut it had was disguised as the launch of the DS Lite.

When Nintendo released a cheap console, it was part of the Blue Ocean strategy. Now when they lower the price it's against the Blue ocean strategy?

Yes. There's a chapter in the book dedicated to pricing.

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

I agree with the sentiment:

Quickly. Take what you have, and flee to the last sanctuary of PC gaming, before the disease finds you. It's too late... for the rest of us... (collapses)

Handhelds are different.

Plus, Nintendo DS has had 2 remodels which have done wonders for it's sales (people love handheld remodels) and let's be honest, the PSP is pretty terrible with keeping up with DS.

While DS gets the majority of software and 3rd party love, PS3 and 360 still have amazing support (more than they should imo). This is due to the reluctance of developers.

Simply put, Wii has more competition than the DS does, it is not in it's own market like many would think. DS also has the success and software support of previous generations to keep it going, Wii still has to fight for every last scrap.

@ph4nt

I agree with what you said.

When the Wii started taking off in 2007, some people were saying the system would follow in the DS´s footsteps, in the sense it´d get huge 3rd party love like the DS gets...well, it hasn´t really happened and the Wii is probably bound to be the first system that, despite being market leader, doesn´t seem to be one when it comes to 3rd parties.

^well if I'm correct the DS was getting more 3rd party games every year now does this sound famlier....Wii

I'll see you to the door.

Would you like the shattered pieces of your ego wrapped in paper or plastic?

The many people commenting on the blue ocean strategy forget the most important thing for consumers, value creation. It's a blue ocean price cut, one to fight disinterest. There are plenty of gamers that buy the Wii too and a price cut will help entice them to make a purchase.

Nintendo are beginning to hit a point of saturation at $249.99 with their current lineup. Until Wii Vitality hits late next year, they musn't have any other market expanding titles on the way and so a price cut to create more value for those who like the Wii but think it's too expensive is probably their only real option.

Many people say "Oh hey I thought Nintendo would bring out colours first!" These people have to understand that Nintendo have a very market orientated strategy and so they've got market intelligence on what is needed and what would work best. They know what they're doing.
