Nintendo: "Currently no plans" for Wii price cut

Platform holder denies price cut talk

Nintendo has denied rampant talk of an impending Wii price cut, telling CVG it currently has "no plans" to reduce the cost of its console.

On the US price cut rumours and possibility of a Wii reduction in Europe, a Nintendo spokesperson said: "We currently have no plans to cut the price of Wii. Current talk of price cuts is rumour and speculation.

"This is rumour and speculation as Nintendo have made no announcements on price. Furthermore this is most likely retailer led much in the same way retailers in the UK offer price promotions on our products."

The statement of course clashes with a leaked Toys R Us brochure, advertising a $50 reduction for the Wii in North America, unless it all turns out to be a US-only affair.

The 'brochure', which advertises a drop down to $249 for the US Wii, is reportedly due to hit at the end of September, with the price cut itself reportedly to come into affect on the first week of October.

If - despite Nintendo's denials - the Wii slash does happen, it's likely to be announced at the Kyoto Cross Media Experience on September 26, where Nintendo's due to participate.

So they do comment on rumour and speculation.

I had a feeling this might be retailer led.

Obviously they felt it was warranted. Whether or not there is a price cut, rumors like this could be very harmful to sales in the next few weeks.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

I think Nintendo won't actually cut the price of the system, rather introducing new bundles / increasing value in the existing one.

Satoru Iwata has been both adamant on the subject and pretty straightforward in his statements, so I don't think he's lying or anything.

I 100% agree, I feel the PS3 suffer for a long while due to this. The explosion it had when the price cut and slim were announced somewhat bears this out as well.

The Interweb is about overreaction, this is what makes it great!

...Imagine how boring the interweb would be if everyone thought logically?

One question I do have that I want to be discussed is why a price cut in this global economy by Nintendo is viewed as a VERY bad decision by web media outlets, yet the price cuts by Sony & Microsoft were viewed as good decisions in this global economy?

This can't be cause of the belief that Nintendo isn't competing is it? I mean it's business, Red or Blue ocean the goal is to put your product in as many hands as possible...

I was expecting to be a retailer move from the start.

I suspect it probably along with Wii Fit+... if they pull out a Wii fit + bundle, that would be insane!

Double standard.

PS3 and Xbox360 are like guys, they can sleep around and be called stud.

While, the Wii is like girls, they are best kept virgin or to 1 partner. That way their price remains high.

... What were we talking about again?
