I thought to do a very comparison of software sales from last year and this year.

These are total SW sales for each console up to end of August 10:(EDITED)

well well well the wii isn owning in terms of software!

SUCH a big increase while PS360 only had a 2 million increase!

This site is good for a lot of statistics, but overall software sales is not one of them. There are a lot of low volume sales that aren't counted.



Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

Lately it has seemed to me that the Wii should be selling more software than it is, but these numbers demonstrate that it's all in my head, I guess.

Are you certain about your Wii 2008 numbers? When I check, I get 79,413K, not your 65,000K.

To be fair the Wii numbers are padded. Between free software and tons of shovelware released for $40, $30, and $20.

@Pineapple: You are correct I had mistakenly taken usaed ds numbers instead of wii for the total year sales 2008

Also, it should be noted that while the percentage growths are the same, the X360 has had a lower relative installbase increase than its competition.

The X360 installbase has had a roughly 55% increase

The Ps3 has had a roughly 70% increase

The Wii installbase has had a roughly 80% increase

 

So the Wii and Ps3 should have increased more software wise than the X360

Note: These numbers are rough estimates.

 

Edit: I may seem a bit offensive - but truly, this is a great thread! It has a lot of interesting info, and something people usually forget.

@Pineapple, they still dont map 100% to your number but much closer, will have to review my numbers again.

Generally though

As to the install base increase, and shovelware software as well as bundled software: there are a large number of factors which influence software sales on all platforms.
So I am not commenting on the reasons or what should have been, its more an exercise in interest and thought would post it up.
