Forums - Microsoft - Xbox 720 "not needed" right now, says Microsoft

I dunno. I would really like a xbox360 and a half with a high capacity optical disk reader and CGI-quality (ahem) graphics. Would buy.

I like the idea of a loss leading console. In theory, it makes sense. I bought the console which offered the most out of the box, and that IS the PS3. Sony made it for a huge loss, and the consumer benefited in a large way.

Its not as if developer support was hindered, and the install base is large right now, even if they are in third place.

The topic of which console is best is just opinion.
But it is sad that more people did not think which console offered the most for the money because it wasn't even worth thinking about to so many people........
because regardless of what is offered, a $600 game system is a little Nuts.

So when we say 2012, do we mean November 2011? or not until November 2012. The latter of which is the better choice for something like the PS4.

I hope they offer a system that I can buy that costs them, (Sony) more to make again next gen. Although $600 is crazy, a $300, and $400 launch scenario would be perfect for the next gen. I guarantee Sony wants to wait for as long as possible though, since in order to increase hardware performance of the PS3 at all would put them way into the red at the $300 price point currently.

I think it would be cool to offer a disc drive-less sku for $300 and one with a disc slot for $400. Although it still (currently) seems incredibly risky to have a Download only console which would not be able to play blu-ray.

The future is unknown... so the future will have to be now! With PS3.

So you like companies losing money on things they sell?

Selling the Ps3 at a loss was one of their dumbest moves ever (and still is) and has erased almost all the profits from the PS2 and PS1 eras, If you want to continue seeing Sony consoles, you better hope they start making money on their hardware from the get go.

"I'd be fine if the next gen comes with 4gb of ram with same cpu and gpu just being overclocked..the only thing that's holding back these HD consoles from truly showing what they are capable of is the lack of ram. My prediction is, Microsoft will add at least 4gb of ram and if is possible overclock the cpu from 3.2ghz to 4.0ghz, same with the gpu increase the speed. This way the Next-Gen Xbox will be a cost efficient console to produce that may start selling under $250."

I like how u think. That extra ram alone would make the PS3 and 360 almost next gen consoles. With 45nm or smaller chips they can do this. Much less heat. Lets hope we see large ram and only slightly up graded everything elso in PS4 / 720.

"I honestly wish Microsoft would have added an HD-DVD drive and used HD-DVD's instead of DVD-9s. But alas they didnt and now their disc size is becoming an issue"

They would of had to support one of the Japanese Giants, (in this case, Toshiba) to support one of the HD formats. There was no way that M$ was gonna do this tho, as they wanted both of them to fail miserably so it would pave the way for their DDL & monopoly goals.

I think the future will have both physical media and DDL co-exsisting. if we just have DDL, we will miss out on so much convenience, re-sales, 2nd prices and cheap deals giving the SW giants more power over us. Not good. Blu-ray FTW!

Having just bought my PS3, I say let the generation live on. With the graphics that I have seen on Fight Night Round 4 and Gears 3 (on my 360) and Uncharted and LBP (on PS3), I don't feel any need at all for a new console generation. I say just keep making games for the stuff we have. My enthusiasm for Natal has GREATLY decreased since E3, but if they are going to use that to lengthen the generation, then so be it.

It makes sense right? If Microsoft wants to make a budget console for next-gen

Microsoft should recycle some of the current internal components like, the tri-core cpu and the gpu and tweek them to be faster, from 3.2ghz to 4.0ghz and shrink the chip to 45nm or smaller for less energy consumption which make it run cooler and the GPU from 500mhz to 1.5ghz than all Microsoft should do is add 4gb of Ram that alone makes it a next-gen console.

That's if Microsoft wants to launch a console starting from $250. aka Nintendo Wii.

Now if Microsoft wants to launch a next-gen Xbox in 2012 at a price no higher than $400 ..

1) I think it will carry a HD-DVD drive, because it has a large storage capacity and its harder to duplicate games (piracy), nobody or hardly anybody have HD-DVD burners and only Microsoft will support the format for games.

2) Could have an ugraded overclocked quad-core cpu to be moderate or maybe come with a hybrid cpu/gpu combo if to manufactor keeps the Xbox under $400 when ready to be shipped ..

3) this time the next-gen Xbox will have a internal Harddrive.

4) If Microsoft would like for the next-gen Xbox in 2011 or 12 to have a long life span just add the most important component called RAM up to 6 to 8gb of Ram ..

I think those specs mentioned there will not exceed $400 at launch 3 years from now..

Intel's 32nm chips have just started rolling off the oven so by 2011 the foundries used by Microsoft or Sony will have a 32nm process ready. Considering next-gen is 2012 at least, you can safely bet on it being at the 32nm node.

your not the smartest one around are you :)

MS will definately not use hd-dvd. The format is dead and the fight is over. It will never ever come back, not even for games. If they would pull something like that off it has to be a dual hd dvd and blu ray player where you could only play games if its an hd dvd. The first time around it was easy to accept it didnt have a blu ray drive. The next time it needs one, not only for the capacity but also to play blu ray movies. Yes, MS is aiming at digital content, but by 2012 the masses will not be ready for it. As well as the limited bandwith. These things take a huge amount of time to change.

I probably see MS putting loads of ram into their system, especcially if prices of ram remain this low. They might even go for an ssd, although thats probably wishfull thinking. internal hdd, i doubt it. They make too much money selling those things seperately. But you might be right on that one.

Considering the way memory prices are crashing, I hope next-gen returns to solid memory, AKA cartridges.

I can't wait until we get rid from optical drives and the massive amounts of reliability issues they introduce. Cartridge systems like the NES or the GENESIS are still working 15 years later. If you want to watch movies, get a dedicated player!
