| disolitude said: Thats pretty harsh twestern. 6-7 games worth playing... I told you I can keep going. :) Here is the lowdown on the dreamcast. Console is amazing for people that like 2D fighters. It has every 2D fighter worth playing. Also, its amazing for people that like SHUMPS. Ikaruga, Mars Matix, Gigawing, Gigawing 2, Under Defeat, Border Down, Trizeal, chaos field, last hope and atleast 5 more that I am forgetting. Dreamcast rules when it comes to light gun games. House of dead 2, Virtua cop 2, Mission confidential, Death Crimson, Deatch Crimson OX, Silent Scope And finally, Dreamcast is amazing because the entire gaming library is available on bit Torrents without a need to mod your system. The bottom line is while the graphics got better, gameplay got more complicated and sandbox made everything easy...people that like those arcadey types of games which are fun for 30 mins a day did not need to buy another console after the dreamcast. |
Well this is a first, me and disolitude in agreement. The DC is a first class console. Even today it maintains a position on my entertainment center hooked up and ready to roll. While my play time with it doesn't approach my Wii, PC, or 360 time, it comes in ahead of my original Xbox certainly, and not terribly far behind my PS2. That is pretty amazing for a console that only really had a little more than two years on the market locally. Many games I still play often are DC games like Headhunter, RE: Code Veronica, Toy Commander, Crazy Taxi (I+II), Quake 3, PowerStone, Heavy Metal, Soul Calibur, Legacy of Kain, MDK2,and Typing of the Dead. In many cases these games have been ported, but in many instances the DC versions remain the best for instance Headhunter, Sonic, or Tony Hawk I and II.
While I'd admit the controller is bulky, it brought many solid concepts to the table. The VMU was a great idea for the time, having an LCD on the controller was actually surprisingly useful. The DC controller also had triggers, which to me is crucial to avoid hand cramping. Despite my love for the PS2 I have always hated the Dual-Shocks. The controller was also quite light, and as I have found out over the years, they are quite durable.
Writing off the DC is a sign of ignorance of console history, and how we go to where we are today. It deserves respect both for what it was then, but also for what it is still today- a system with lots of great games. The DC provided much of the innovation we are seeing now, and with the exception of the Wii it was one of the ballsiest console releases ever. Online at the very least would not be where it is today were it not for the momentum put in place by the Dreamcast making it a standard feature.
