D23: New Pirates Film Announced

UPDATED: Captain Jack's next gets a curious title.

September 11, 2009 - This afternoon at the D23 Expo in Anaheim, California, Disney films president Dick Cook concluded a presentation on the company's future cinematic slate by bringing down the house...The curtains parted and the mast of a pirate ship emerged from the misty darkness. Silhouetted behind the sail, the outline of -- you guessed it -- Captain Jack Sparrow. The mast turned, revealing Johnny Depp, in full Sparrow regalia, drunkenly swaying as the screen above him faded and the Pirates of the Caribbean logo appeared, revealing, for the first time, the tirle of the upcoming fourth film in the series:

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides...

And beneath it, the words, "Summer 2011."

No indications from either Depp or Cook about the story of the film, but needless to the say, the crowd leapt to their feet in frenzied excitement. It should be noted, however, that there is a 1988 pirate-themed fantasy novel of the same name written by Tim Powers. Could this be the source material from which the film will be drawn? Had Disney purchased the rights? We can't be sure, but it's surely a strange coincidence.

UPDATED: It's looking more and more like Pirates 4 will indeed be based on the Tim Powers book On Stranger Tides. An online search for the plot to the book revealed that it revolves around Blackbeard's search for the Fountain of Youth. You'll recall that the last Pirates film, At World's End, ended with Jack Sparrow keeping a portion of a map that shows the way to the Fountain of Youth. Coincidence? We think not!

I think people are tired of all the superhero movies... Spiderman and Batman (why don't you think it will make 400million? Dark Knight made 528 million I believe) will do very well but Thor, Green Lantern and Captain America are kind of minor super heros and they might each do about 100m.

I really hope they don't bowdlerize the series like they did with Die Hard and Terminator.

Pirates 4 = Blockbuster of the year

No Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley will be good for it too.
