Forums - Sony - Buying a new Hard Drive, HELP!

^Just tried Craigslist and there was nothing for my area at all, so I'll give Newegg a try

Also I'd still like to know, is there a hard drive that could harm my PS3 if I buy it?, does it matter if its 5400rpm or 7200rpm?

No way they could harm your console, we're talking standard SATA here. And 7200rpm will generally be faster in seek times, resulting in slightly better performance for some installed games.

^I could be wrong and this may not make any sense, but someone was saying they got a 7200rpm harddrive and it ruined his ps3 because the 7200rpm was putting out to much heat, does that make sense?

^ No that doesn't make sense. I installed a SATA 7200 2.5" hard disk on my PS3 about a month ago. Everything's great, there was no problems at all.
I think you should go with the 7200 rpm. This is the hard disk that I installed on my PS3

7200 rpm drive don't have too much speed benefit. Save your money and buy higher capacity drive instead. If you're looking at 500 gb drive, try the toshiba drive, it runs pretty cool and it's $90 on newegg which also has 10% if you use the promo code EMCHDD10B by today 9/13 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822149087

I can't think of any reason why a hard drive would damage your PS3. Just about all SATA laptop hard drive will work. I currently use the Western Digital 500GB 5400rpm Scorpio Blue with no problem.

So really all that matters is just that it has to be 2.5"?

1TB PS3 hardrive console coming out in mid 2010 100% confirmed bundled with FF13 versus,

It also has to be SATA.  Also, I don't think the 12.5mm height drives will fit but the only drive that height is the new 750gb drive from western digital.  Normal height drives are about 9mm.

do you always post this? , i saw alot of the same joke posts from you...

Not sure if you decided on anything yet, but I have a 7200 RPM drive and it has been in my system for over a year with no problem.  And just so you know I have the 60GB launch model.

There is a small increase in speed due to it, duh.  While I never did the research myself, I saw, recenlty a PS3 Slim thread that compared speeds, that someone replied with tests of the phat PS3 using a 5200 and 7200 RPM hard drive.  The 7200 RPM outperformed, but not by much.

Also, the HD that I got had a 16MB cache, compared to 8MB.  I am not sure what exactly that can do to performance, I just took the word of a friend of mine who knew more about HD's than I did.

This is what I got.

All I can really say is, the speed isn't going to be a big problem.  Just find a company that you trust and find a price/size that fits you.  And go with newegg.
