Forums - Sales Discussion - Change in Sales Game of the Day (9/12) - Metal Gear Solid 4

My 2nd most favourite PS3 game after Valkyria Chronicle. Must buy for PS3 owner that already played previous games (if you never played older ones you might have problem to catch up its story)

The fans are really loyal IMO... though Im not certain about the 5 million number some people are expecting it to achieve lifetime 4.5 is pretty much certain... maybe 4.7-4.8. Anyways, it had great sales on a console that has the smallest userbase... hell the sales would have been great on any console ever

Vote the Mayor for Mayor!

I've updated the originial post, and you should be able to vote in the poll. Sorry my computer crashed after making the thread, and then I had to leave for awhile before I could fix it.

Bigger Userbase doesn't always equal bigger sales??

I thought we understood this already, people...

I'm not sure if that was directed at me, from the original post, but if it was, obviously the userbase isn't the only factor in a games sales, and MGS4 is  a good example of that.  But if you compare other games on the PS3 to PS2 like Ratchet and Clank or Hot Shots Golf, both of those are down significantly compared to the sales on the PS2.  Also multiplat games on PS3 compared to PS2 are down drastically as well with games like Grand Theft Auto, Madden, Burnout, Prince of Persia etc. Whereas if you compare the games on Wii compared to Gamecube which now have a bigger userbase to sell to, games like Mario, Smash Bros, Zelda, Mario Kart, Mario Party, have all sold better on the Wii, but not all proportionality larger.  So while userbase isn't the only factor, it can be important, and that’s why I find it impressive that MGS4 has sold as well as the PS2 games, despite an 80% smaller userbase.

May also be the case if you played the previous ones;.

The bundles sure helped.

A thread was needed to highlight a small change in MGS 4 sales? Last time I checked a few months ago it was around 4.08 million.

MGS 4 is a great game and probably one of the best games on the PS3. Now MGS 4 is a Platinum title at $30 brand new. MGS 4 should see more sales over its lifetime and get to 5 million sales ltd.

MGS 4 managed to outsell MGS 3 because it was the first MGS game released on the PS3. It was hyped and marketed a lot which helped boost its sales.

PS3 is the only console that is pirate free for now - but the hackers will hack it eventually. Piracy of software is rampant worldwide which adversely impacts on game sales. PS1 and PS2 along with all other systems as well as PC are so easily pirated it is a joke.

Yeah the user base difference makes a huge difference.

Well apparently you found it interesting enough to post in it.  I also feel like it is made pretty clear in the original post thatI wanted people to talk about why MGS4 was able to not see a steep decline despite selling on a much smaller userbase comared to the games last gen.  It's not about the change in sales of MGS4 over the last couple months, but compared to the sales of the franchise last gen.

This thread is doing pretty well comment wise compared to the two previous Game of the Day threads, but the poll doesn't have that many votes yet. Probably because the poll wasn't working for the first few hours, but still I would like to get some more votes in before the poll expires later.

Does anybody have any thoughts about the role bundles played in MGS4's sales? I think I remember, that the sales of the game after the first month or so, really seemed to depend on the availability of the bundles. Why do you think that was, and how much do you think bundles effected the sales?
