Forums - PC - Fun Topic. Which are better for Gaming? PC's or Consoles?

@shio:
I don't know exact figures for PC gamers, maybe nobody really does, but the minimum estimate of 10% of PC users being also gamers means at least 100million gamers amongst WinXP users alone, so we can at least say that PC gamers and console ones are in the same order of magnitude, with PC being one order of magnitude greater than a lot of single console platforms (we won't be able to tell it for this gen until it's over, but we can predict that Wii has very good chances to end in the same order of magnitude as PC gamers, with figures possibly greater than XP gamers). To cut it short, despite the crisis, both PC and console gaming look healthy enough, despite what the respective haters wish.

Whoa! I blame PCs for the fight sticks. Other than that, Make no mistake, two of the three major consoles are more PCish than anything before them. Console gaming owes a lot to PCs, but the era of PC gaming being the king is over. I'm not saying PC gaming is a horrible thing, obviously it's not because millions of people game on PCs daily, I'm just saying that the Console has taken over in many aspects.

@ Vlad...funny, I was just going to post the same thing, you have failed to convince me that you know what you are talking about since I have had to hold your hand every step of the way. It's funny because I am not a huge PC gamer, and I know more about the technical aspect of it than you. I am glad you decieded to stop embarrassing yourself, it's better for everybody involved...except for those looking in and laughing at your failed points.

Let me ask you this, when has PC ever been king? And king in terms of what? Amuse me with your answer, because never has PC been so close to the console industry in terms of marketshare, and never has PC had so much more game releases before this gen (there are far more PC games in development than all console games combined).

In what aspects has consoles taken over. The way I see it, they have only copied what PC is doing, without ever being able to challenge PC in them.

Uh....Back in the late 70s, PCs (including Macs) were the ONLY venue for gaming.

Following this, we had Atari and NES come out, but PCs were still huge.  Especially in Japan and Europe, PCs not only held vast marketshare, but rivaled the consoles.  Indeed, the PC units spawned many of the Console hits and many games that came out on the Atari or NES were also on PC platforms such as MSX, Commodore or IBM (Dragon Quest, Metal Gear, Castlevania, Maniac Mansion, etc).  Plus, the PC was way ahead of the consoles in certain areas of innovation and processing power.  While the Genesis and Super Nintendo was just coming out, the PC was coming out with games like Tie Fighter and Sim City 2000.  Its arguable to say that PC was more successful than consoles for quite a while.

It wasn't until around the mid 90s that consoles really started to overtake the PC market.  Mostly because of a combination of a lot of good PC developers began to taper off of making good solid games and because consoles kept rising in both quality and quantity.  As soon as the Playstation and N64 came out, the PC had some major competition.  But at that time, they had little to offer aside from Blizzard and a fledgling FPS market.  Many of its key genres had either lost interest or support from developers (simulation games, action/adventure games, puzzle games, etc).  Some of these genres are coming back now, but its only due to the effort of very select companies.

You don't know anything. Consoles were the first ones to reach the public, and PCs only did the same 10 years after the consoles. In the 70's and early 80's, the PC gaming scene was pretty much composed of hobbyists making small PC games as a hobby. And it was only in the 90's that PC reached mainstream, something consoles had done in the 80's.

PC gaming was never bigger than Console gaming, but now it is starting to challenge them. PC gaming will keep gaining space the more this gen continues.

Going for the 'nyah nyah, you're stupid' argument?

Consoles came from entrepeneurs who wanted to make a profit off of people who had TVs.  But their platforms were modeled off of hardware and software from Arcades and, *shock* PCs.  And either you are going to admit it (or go back and research the facts yourself), but all the early games, from RPGs to early Adventure games (text based and the first graphics based games) to the first simulation games to even the first FPS games were all on PC.

Think. Consoles would've never existed if Computers weren't invented, and that's not the point. The point is, that in the 70's, Computer games was only a hobby thing, and there were more consoles sold than PCs!!!!!!

In 1977 only 48 thousand PCs were sold worldwide! That year was also marked by the launch of Atari 2600, a console that sold 30 millions! In 2007, 264 millions PC were sold. See the difference?

EDIT: My guess is in the 70's, consoles had like 99% of the game sales, while PC has 1% or something. But today it is very different.

You seem really focused on how COnsoles sold more.  But you still aren't right on many facts.  PCs were the first gaming venue before consoles.  Heck, the Atari isn't even the first gaming console.  That honor goes to the Magnavox Odyssey.  And like I was trying to explain before, the Atari came about as a fusion of trying to incorperate the popular software of PC and Arcade games to a home console unit to play on TVs (like the very successful Magnavox Odyssey had already done).

But also like I was trying to mention before, PCs kept growing in innovation and marketshare all through the 80s and 90s.  Creating some of the most influential and groundbreaking series (and genres) of gaming.  From FPS to Simulation games to RPGs to point and click action/adventure games to space sims, etc.  They might not have sold as well as Pac-man on the Atari or Mario on the NES, but they did come first and they did influence games on consoles.

PC games then fell sharply into a decline in the mid-90s and have only seen a recent upswing.

Six upcoming games you should look into:

During the history of PC gaming there's always been alternation of dominance with console gaming, right now we can say that console gaming prevails, but exceeding easily 100million users just from its estimated 10% of Win XP users, PC is still an important platform, even now that PS2+7th gen consoles exceed 200million. Where console dominance was never disputed is in handhelds.

Obviously PC is better platform.

Why?

Becouse PC can do absolutly everything than consoles can given proper accessory set.

Consoles have only two advantages:
- they are cheaper
- they are computer illiterate friendly (just put disk into machine and it plays)

For me it's consoles.

I grew up with console games. I usually only used the computer for school work, internet, checking my mail back in the days and never really for gaming. I only have a very little library of PC games. In fact only four full games and one expansion: Warcraft III + FT, Starcraft, Crysis and Call of Duty 4. That may seem sad but I love console games much better. Hell I own two copies of COD4, one for PC and the other for PS3.

Reasons why I prefer console games over PC:

Variety of Games that I LOVE MORE THAN PC GAMES
Friends playing beside you with split screen. (Good old PS2 days. So many good split screen games back then. Nowadays with PS3 I have limited games which I can play split screen stuff with my bro.)
I'd rather play games on my 50 inch 1080p Samsung LCD screen rather than on a 15 inch Samsung comp screen.

There's more but I'm sure everyone gets the point here.

So Console games are better for me.

That argument is ignorant. You can connect PC to you TV just as well as any console. Or for that matter you can play console on 15" lcd monitor (x360/ps3)

I've connected a PC to a large screen TV and its inconvenient. You can also plug your Xbox 360 into your PC and use LAN tunneling software to avoid paying for Xbox Live, but would you?

Tease.

It is not reasonably possible to connect my PC to my big TV.

I have the most epic death scene ever in VGChartz Mafia.  Thanks WordsofWisdom!

With numerous wires stretched to their fullest, it's difficult to move the tower in and out of the desk. However, my order from monoprice came in last week (including a DVI-HDMI adapter) and I decided to hook it up to the TV for the day.

Running games in 1280x720 looked great! It's especially helpful that the TV is all calibrated and such while my monitor is mainly set up for seeing things rather than looking at dark corners. Since there's no desk though it's kind of difficult to control because the keyboard was on my lap and the mouse at my side on the couch (using the side of a 3 ring binder as my mouse pad). Still, trying games like Team Fortress 2 and Half-Life Episode 2 furthered my interest in getting an LCD monitor to replace my CRT as well as hooking the tower to the TV again in the future.

I commented about it in another thread, but I ran the Resident Evil 5 benchmark tool at 1920x1080, 8xAA, and everything at their highest and it looked great while running around 30fps. Sometimes there would be drops to the high 20's, but the average stayed in the low to mid 30's in the variable test. Not bad for an 8800gt and overclocked e2160, lol.

My room mate and I considered it with his Xbox, but we were unable to get it working.
