Just wanting people to share what anecdotal evidence they may come accross for the 40GB PS3.

So far, When my friend found out today about the AUS$699 (Used to be AUS$999), he almost flipped and went out and bought one straight away. BC doesn't matter to him.  I've seen posters up at most major retail outlets advertising it and quite a large amount of people show interest in it, along with a good number of them actually purchasing it.

To me it seems as though the 40GB PS3 is selling rather well despite the lack of BC.  Is this just a rush of first takers or will this trend be kept?

Share any experiences you might have had. Good or Bad. 

I will check in Paris If I have the time.

But I expect the 60gb to outsell the 40gb.

Well, i have about 5 firends that want to buy a PS3 of which 3 of them decided to not buy a 40gb sku because of the lack of BC. PS3 is basically selling rather bad compared to the Wii and Xbox in Poland, at least that's what i have been able to gather from two of our better video game stores.

The 60Gb is outselling it .Only 100 euros more for the backwards compatibility ,20Gb more ,two USB ports ,card readers and two games and one extra controller is just too good value .And many gamers have been urged to get that version in fear that it is discontinued so they are buying it in hordes ,in fact in some stores they are already sold out even with the ample supplies they had .I suppose they can command more but for the moment some stores are sold out .

The 40Gb will do great in christmas though .When people rush to the stores to buy the christmas gifts and the Reyes gifts (in southern europe its the 6 of january ,the people write a letter to the Magic Kings about what they want to be offered and your parents buy it to you and you buy to your parents something as well ) they will automatically stick to the cheaper option aside from other considerations .

Ps3 sells better than Wii and X360 in Poland. Definitely. I wouldn't be surprised if it sells better than both competitive systems together. I've talked few times to shop attendents in Media Markt in Wrocław and they told me PS3 sells much better than X360 despite higher price. One of the biggest online stores - Ultima - has PS3 on spot nr 10 (best selling stuff) - higher than Wii or X360. Even on Allegro PS3 sells better than X360. Not to mention Wii (no bids at all even though you can pick one up for 849 zł (official price - 1099 zł)). Which stores did you talk too?

Then I suppose they wont be buying a 360 either as it doesnt have backward compatibility as well .

In any case Sony has approached to your friends quite a lot ,for the next price drop they may be joining .

Agree! I want also a PS3 with BC, me from Japan, but as soon as that entirely disappears I'll wait buying a PS3 until the price dropped more, so yes... I'm willing to pay for a PS3 'with' BC, but not without. Its not that I never would buy a PS3 then, but simply wait.
