Forums - Sony - Sony’s Facial Recognition Software via PlayStation Eye

Some may pass those vids off, as the games showed aren't exactly like the ones on the natal.  But they are very similar.  Which just goes to show you need the not only the hardware, but also the software?  With EyeToy's simple tech it already gave things very similar to Natal.  Now think what the PSEye can do.  There's only 2 real points you need to consider really.

1.  The vids of Natal have all been commercials.  Fictional displays of what they WANT Natal to be able to do.  The only real thing we saw was the "BAM!" glitch.  And don't tell me it's because he turned around and the Natal got confused.  It started screwing up the second he got in front of the camera.  What I find funny is people who put their whole faith in MS to fix these issues completely at launch.  Yea, cause that's exactly what their track record shows they'll do.

2.  Whether or not Natal uses some new tech or not, if it works how they want, it will still be possible with the PSEye.  However, MS will use this "new" tech as a reason to charge an arm and a leg for it.  Like they do with just about everything.

nice, facial recognition is old though....

@the "Natal Vs PSEye" guys
As far as i know, most of these things, natal and PSeye will be shovelware.
and were back to the controllers playing something good instead

@Smashed - As a dual HD console owner, im just stating the my opinon, Nintendos motion + and Sonys Wands + PSEye feel sort of out-dated VS NATAL, but if Sony can make this work out RIGHT then it might be equal with NATAL, as of right now though i'd rather sonys idea a 8 while MS gets a 9.

natal is the most limiting of the three. It only allows for on rail games.. Cause theres no controller.

ps3 has the best solution with dual analogues you'll be able to move and turn without having to point at the edge of the screen (a frustration in wii games)

not to mention the backup of sony and the pseye that can use various headtracking and other tools to add to the immersion.

Imagine a first person shooter with the wands but also using headtracking :p awesome.

Check out my game about moles ^

I would love to see this translate to Home. Talk about more immersive.

Actually Sony's motion is the most limited of the three.  It only allows for on rails games because there is no analog sticks.  They have not confirmed nor even stated they will be adding any, so you can stop assuming that will be the case.

Also, you need 2 wands just to track 2 points in 3D space, while Natal can track 48 points without having you buy up to 8 wands for multiplayer.  Anything else such as mapping objects over your hands and what-not is also possible on Natal.  So basically Natal can do everything and more than Sony's motion can do, without the need to buy up to 8 wands.  And of course there is limitless options where Natal can augment normal controller based gameplay using leaning, voice recognition, etc.

And finally, head tracking in any game would be basically pointless (except for Natal games since you use your whole body and head tracking is just part of the overall body tracking).  You can only turn your head slightly and still see the screen well.  Such small movements won't be beneficial to the experience.  Neither would moving around the room to get different angles like the current head tracking technology is limited to.

Give me Mike Tysons FACE lmaoooo

can't wait for Track Season 2009/2010, guna beast out!

Travis Touchdown ERECTION CONFIRMED!

Maybe we should wait to see the actual games used on both Ps3 wand and Natal before bragging what they will do. Often something can look good on paper but doesn't work as well in practice.

For example in the natal video it shows an example of a girl racing. If this is a hardcore racing game then hardcore gamers usually like to have a steering wheel. If it's a casual racing game like Mario Kart then this is already  well covered on the wii.

As long as we are talking about assumptions, let's lay them all on the table. Sony's Motion Controller hasn't been confirmed to have analog sticks. However, it has been confirmed to have an analog trigger. That may be where Staude got confused.

And as for your claim that Natal will track 48 points so there will be no need for further purchases, those two statements are completely unrelated. Natal tracks 48 points on one body. That has nothing to do with multiplayer. Furthermore, your argument for additional purchases is rendered relatively moot by the fact that we don't know how much either piece of technology will cost. If Natal costs $100 and Sony's Motion controllers cost $60 for a pack of two with PlayStation Eye and $30 more for another pack of two, then there you go.

microsoft it's trying to do this, for the cheap.
even with all that hardware motion capture it's not perfect.

and something unpredictable as a infrared burst won't help perfect it, microsoft never had a decent unbugged somewhere. even today their windows platform still a cluster of bugs.

and now with a 1.3 cmos sensor, and infra red they are trying to make what 64 cameras and a whole studio can barely do.

However, I would bet that Sony's offering would be about $20 per additional controller at minimum.  Possibly up to $40 per additional wand similar to Nintendo's controller prices.  I do agree that a PSEye with 2 wands should be about $60-75, though.  Also, while we know Natal can track 48 points on a body to make a wire frame, for multiplayer it could split that to 12 points per person or maybe it is even capable for 48 per person.  That is something we definitely won't know for a while.

@Xoj
Windows sure works great for me.  In fact, as an IT Professional dealing with both Mac and Windows software, it seems we have the most issues with OS X rather than any Windows OS.  I don't see how you can make such a generalized statement when MS makes so many great products that run on literally trillions of possible hardware combinations... that's impressive if you ask me.

Also, they are not trying to do what that studio does.  They are just trying to capture the 3D motion from one the front for use with gaming, not for use with mapping full body animations and hundreds to thousands of unique movements like rolls, handing from a bar upside down, fight maneuvers, etc.

Quite trying to downplay Natal.  We get that you have your doubts but this is just silly.
