Forums - Sales - The japanese console market is basically dead.. but

Slim will make Japan a little interesting hardware wise for a couple weeks. But after that it will probably slump down to the depressing numbers we've seen all year from all 3 consoles.

Well Wii has Mario Brothers hitting for christmas. And PS3 could make a run for it up to the Holidays. We all saw how earlier in the yr, the software really helped the ps3 hw stay with Wii stride for stride until early May. Next week PS3 has ToV, in Oct they have Tekken 6, Nov or Dec possibly GT5 and Dec  17th FFXIII bundle.

Wii doing 15k is not helping ether

But the wii hasn't gotten in a 1000 of 15K for 3 months....

Former something....

Wii will probably get a decent boost from NSMB Wii + Wii Fit Plus + year end shopping rush in Japan.

Likewise PS3 will get a big boost in December from FF13 + year end shopping rush.

I think the bigger question is do both systems go back into the tank for January? I think so, unfortunately.

Japan is a portable market ... everything is about portables there. The moment handhelds could do decent 3D gaming (DS and PSP) is the moment console gaming started to lose relevance.

PS3 isn't doing anything. The home console business is basically dead there. It's been probably the worst gen for home console devs ever. SW sales are pathetic in comparison to what consoles sold last gen.

Handhelds is where the business is at, I fear that by next gen most Japanese devs would have moved into the handheld business (those devs that don't make Western appealing games too)

Bets with Conegamer:

Pandora's Tower will have an opening week of less than 37k in Japan. (Won!)
Pandora's Tower will sell less than 100k lifetime in Japan.
Stakes: 1 week of avatar control for each one.

Fullfilled Prophecies

Japan has been hit by the global recession even worse than most countries. It's inevitable that console sales are going to go down and handhelds are a much cheaper investment than a home console. When the economy starts to turn around, as it seems to be doing, then you'll probably start to see console sales start to go up across the board.

Proudest Platinums:
1. Gran Turismo 5
2. Persona 4 Arena
3. Wipeout HD
4. Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2
5. Super Street Fighter 4
