^Took who long enough? So far as I can tell (from VGC data) PS3 is/will be the all time third fastest console to reach 24 million, behind Wii and PS2. Seems like a pretty good feat for a console which has been declared dead and will cause the ultimate downfall of Sony as a viable company on a regular basis.

Edit: What Carl said.

@ NYANKS: I don't think the losses will ever be regarded as acceptable, in that this is a strategy Sony are unlikely to ever repeat to the extent that they have with the PS3. They might make another expensive console, but not sell it at a loss. Or they might sell a loss making console, but at a price that is much closer to the competition, and for a much lower per unit loss.

PS3 3rd fastest selling system?

mhhmmm....

http://news.vgchartz.com/news.php?id=3035

PS1 sales history:

0.9 (only released in 1 region)

3.4

9.2

19.3

PS3 sales:

3.6

9.2

10

13 (assuming they meet forecasts).

I guess you can say it sold faster than PS1 in it's first 3 years since the Ps1 wasn't available outside of Japan for the first year, but it is clearly behind pace even if sony exceeds their shipment forecast by millions and millions of units.

PS3 is still trailing behind DS, Wii, PS2, PS1, GB, GBA. so...7th place.

It will reach 24 million before PS1 did. It has sold faster so far, than PS1 did.

He edited to say "What Carl said" and Carl said "home consoles", so you can remove the handhelds from your list to.

PS3 is currently the 3rd fastest selling home console, ever.

it'll reach 24 million, and by christmas the gap between the ps3 and 360 will be 4-5 million

Even if the PS3 outsells the 360 by 500k a week (which would mean it would have to be selling ~650k every week if 360 managed 150k), it would take until halfway through October to close the game to 4 million.

Assuming 350k gain this week, 100k gain next week, and a steady 100k gain until the beginning of November. Ps3 will have closed the gap to 6.8-7 million, this is being incredibly generous.

Last Nov / Dec, 360 sold 4.9 million while Ps3 sold 3.2 million

Assuming 360 remains flat yoy, Ps3 would need on average a 115% increase in weekly sales (2.15  times what it did last year) in order to close the gap to 5 million.

FF XIII and GT 5 say hi.

Still don't see it happening, especially since FF 13 is only in Japan.

How many units did PS3 sell in Japan when the FF XIII DEMO came out?

How many units did PS3 sell in Japan when the FF XIII DEMO came out?

Is it enough to increase WW ps3 sales by over 100%? I don't think so. Maybe in Japan for 2 weeks.

^^ number 1, GT5 in europe, number 2, FFXIII in japan, = ps3 outselling 360 this christmas by a minimum by 2.7 million. Maximum 4 million

Just looked it up. Sold 60k with the demo (which was priced at $50, by the way since it came with ACC). I see multiple hundred thousand PS3s sold that week. Since 360 sells virtually nothing in Japan, just about 100% of sales in japan directly cut into the 360's lead.

Ok, assuming Ps3 sells 200k per week for all of December in Japan (including the weeks before FF 13 launches), it would still need a 100% increase worldwide to outsell the 360 by enough.

Of course, if the 360 manages to have an incrases yoy, which is very liekyl seeing the effect of the price cut yoy, it will be even more unlikely to close the 360 lead to 5 million.

I myself predict from now until Jan. 1st, 360 will be outsold by 1.5-2 million units.
