They are very different, 3D Marios have an important feel of exploration, 2D Marios dont, but 2D Mario is still more fun

This reflects my sentiments. 3D Mario is slower-paced and more exploratory as a whole, while 2D Mario has a timer, is generally rather linear within stages (though the world maps can sprawl), and focused on action and high scores.

yes they are different, the gameplay is COMPLETLY different, the only thing that stays the same is that both are set in the Mario universe

For me, 3D Mario is about exploration and fooling around just as much as the actual challenge. So yes, I'd say they are totally different games.

The 3d element adds a lot, but both are a lot of fun.

If i had to choose I'd say I enjoy the 3d versions better (Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine and Mario Galaxy) but the 2d games (Super Mario Brothers, super mario brothers 3 and super mario world) where also extremely fun, just not quite as much.

Super Mario Brothers 2 was fun (americas), but it's not comparable to the others in any way really and was substandard to the others, but we all know why that is!

Super mario brothers 2, the lost levels, is comparable to super mario broths, except it's not fun at all. it's a torturous experience!
