3d Mario adds the element of free exploration while 2d Mario tends to focus on direct challenges that happen in a linear method.

This reflects my sentiments. 3D Mario is slower-paced and more exploratory as a whole, while 2D Mario has a timer, is generally rather linear within stages (though the world maps can sprawl), and focused on action and high scores.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.
