My bet is virus if I recall correctly I had one doing something similar like 3 years ago and as soon as it was removed the computer began to shutdown properly again.

I don't currently have it installed since I haven't felt the need to yet I surf a lot safer than I used to but the AV software I used that cleaned it up was AVG free can download it from here. http://free.grisoft.com/ Another alternative free scan that runs through a web browser http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ dunno if it'll pick it up though if thats indeed what it is. Not much experience here with any for pay AV but I've heard good things about NOD32 good luck with it if it is a virus.

Besides your problem could have a million reasons... whats easier than finding it (unless its a no brainer) is to format or just re-install windows...

You people are suggesting SORIKU to format it's PC...? I support that too!

@leo-j: I have Windows XP, and my PC starts and shuts down in a pinch.

Windows XP is very stable, leo-j, what do you use?

Linux is great, but XP is great too...

As for me, I have Vista because I bought this computer from a friend, who got Vista for like $10. It pretty much sucks though...I would go back to XP if I could find my disc...

No Soriku do no reformat your PC lol. That's just crazy. My PC occasionally wont turn off for some reason as well. Just hold the power button in for about 5 seconds and then the PC will turn off. The next time you try a shutdown it will probably turn off fine. At least mine did.

Also you can try a system restore. Restore your PC to a date when your PC was running fine. Make sure you save anything important to disc that you might need though. Just the stuff thats important that was created after the restore date.
