Kitase: Final Fantasy titles shouldn’t take as long to develop in the future

Yoshi Kitase and Motomu Toriyama from Square Enix told VG247 that Final Fantasy games shouldn’t take as long to develop in the future.

During the conversation, we mentioned CEO of Square Enix Yoichi Wada’s comment regarding the firm “taking too long to produce games”, to see if they were in agreement.

Us: Yoichi Wada has said that he wants the development rate to go a bit faster. Is this possible and what is the development team doing to help speed things along for the future?

FFXIII’s Yoshi Kitase and Motomu Toriyama, speaking through a translator: For FFXIII there are a lot of firsts, and because it’s a new console that the teams are working on, it took a little time for the team to get used to everything. Now that they have the engine built for it the basics are covered, so the development time for future projects should be shortened.

Still, it may not be as simple as Wada thinks (laughing).

Hopefully, what this means, is that it won’t take what feels like ten years in between titles.

Final Fantasy XII needed 5 years, lol. It did have new engine though.

The problem with that statement is that it's just wishful thinking and I wouldn't be surprised if you could find a similar type of statement towards the end of development for the last few FF games.

The reason RPG games are a dying breed is because:

  • They take a lot of time because they are expected to have a lot of varied content
  • They take a lot of time because they are expected to make a game that stays interesting for 100+ hours
  • They take a lot of time because they are expected to be full of the best looking eye candy ever

Anyone who thinks these games with the budget and scope of the usual FF games should take the same amount of time as any other game while keeping the same bar is insane.

Hopefully they learned their lesson and won't announce their games over half a decade in advance anymore.

And just to add a little more, one of three things will happen with the next main FF game:

  • They keep the same bar and the game still takes half a decade to make.
  • They lower the bar and receive a giant backlash after comparison video after comparison video after comparison video.
  • They "downgrade" to the Wii or DS.

One of those goes against his statement, two of those go with the statement, and one of those two won't happen.  I'll leave it up to whoever cares to guess which is which.

guess this is what you get when you start adding stuff like voiced NPCs

"Dr. Tenma, according to you, lives are equal. That's why I live today. But you must have realised it by now...the only thing people are equal in is death"---Johann Liebert (MONSTER)

"WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler

That is especially for FF JRPG's.... Other JRPG's most of the time don't look that great....

Well okay =p.. I just said that because of this : (RPG games are a dying breed) sound like you were talking about JRPG's in general.

Well that one was in general.  Yes, they're still being made but the aren't the thing anymore.  They're expensive to make and they don't sell as well as other games.  Traditional RPG's are a dying breed (I'm not counting those other games that just list RPG elements as a buzz word).
