A DVD player isn't going to be a selling point, so why add it? Basically everyone has DVD players nowadays, and if not, you can get them for like 20 bucks, so why buy a 250 dollar/euro console for it? Besides, Wii is still outselling its competitors (aside from the coming few weeks maybe beacuse of Sony and MS's pricecuts, but I'm sure those sales spikes will die off soon too), so why would Nintendo even consider releasing a new console...?

While the Wii will surely be ahead of the PS3 and X360 given enough time for the price cuts to fall back to "normal" levels, there is still good reason for Nintendo to do something to boost hardware sales. This time last year we were seeing over 100k every week, but now we are seeing 75k. While 75k is still fairly impressive, they will never meet their hardware shipment projections at the current rate. They really need to boost demand either by a price cut, must have software, new colors, or new features.

I think nintendo shoulden't relelease the wii's in diffrent colors.That is a werid way to increase sales.I say relelease an HD wii.They got the money.

I hope this is not the only thing they will do. Colors will help increasing sales, but this will add value and will be just another way to say that they don't want to cut the price...i believe iwata and all Nintendo are smarter that how it seems by this statement...

It just dawned on me. Why would Nintendo want to enable movie DVD playback? The answer I just thought of was Netflix. Nintendo wants in on Netflix, but since Netflix has a big chunk of DVD libraries, perhaps it sweetens the pot for people to get Netflix accounts to use with their Wii?

A bit of an aside, but if you install the homebrew channel, any current Wii will play DVDs. I figure it wouldn't be too hard to implement.

but there is a risk of bricking it and it willl void your warranty even though mines expired long ago and i think i read somewhere maybe in this thread before that with the homebrew dvd playback on wii it actually burns your drive...

About the DVD you may be right, but about the colors you're absolutely wrong.

Maybe in EU and US there will not be a % bump like the one in Japan, considering that was bundled with the best selling third party console game until now, but there is many people who will go out to buy a black wii, it will not take the Wii and push it for years over years, but a boost for some weeks is guaranteed.
