Forums - Nintendo - So DSi is 8th Generation?

Ok... conclusion time.

Consoles, being placed static in the home, can easily be given add-on peripherals for specific games.
Handhelds do not have that luxury in all cases, so seperate models are sometimes needed to refresh interest in the platform.

A platform is only of a new generation if it is intended to be so.... Nintendo WILL release another handheld eventually which has the purpose of being a seperate system. It may be able to play DS games as a backward compatible function, but it will be primarily for new games.

If the DSi were a new generation, different from the DS/DSlite, then we would already have had dozens of exclusive retail games for it.

I think DSi is a new generation. The same way PS2+Eyetoy was a new gen. And a PS2 with microphone is a new gen. And Wii with balance board is another different gen. And the Wii with WM+. So on so on.

Every single sh*t that comes out that produces exclusive games means a new gen.

Eyetoy could be used on every PS2. Same gen as PS2.

Microphone could be use don every PS2. Same gen as PS2.

Balance board can be used on every Wii. Same gen as Wii.

Now, Monster Finder and System Flaw cant be played on every DS... What does this mean?

Final Fantasy XI can't be played on every PS2. Is the slim a different console from the Phat?

How cant it?

Where will you put th HDD on the PS2 slim?

You can't play FFXI without it.

AND....................

Since PSP-1000 can't use skype, it UMD data isn't cached in memory to decrease game loading times and has less RAM, is an older generation right?

So does PSP-2000, after all, PSP-3000 let you enjoy more the beautiful graphics: it has higher contrast ratio, and wider color gamut. Not to mention the new video-out capability allows gameplay video to be output in interlaced format.

The GCs without the the Digital AV output are in another generation. (How there they not permit seeing Metroid in 480p?)

The GC with DVD player capabilities? Whole new generation, you can't do that on other GCs.

PSONE??? WTF, my old PS1 doesn't have a LCD screen in it to enjoy gaming in my car, how obsolet PS1 becomes.......

GB POCKET??? I need a special cable to connect to the older GB, shit new generation. GTFO with that cable!!!

Congrats, you answered a question that had already been answered...

As for the red stuff, i dont think they all had exclusive games, which is what i was talking about. Blue, i have no idea of what games were even released near it. Did it have GB Pocket exclusive games?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_2_Expansion_Bay

As of December 2004, it is widely believed that Sony is no longer interested in supporting the hard drive. The new slimline model of PlayStation 2, which replaced the older, larger model in November 2004, is not capable of using the hard drive and while Sony has stated they are investigating alternatives, it is thought that none will be forthcoming due to the relatively late date in the product's lifecycle. The absence of support for the HDD in the slimline PS2 also means that Final Fantasy XI can only be played on older PlayStation 2s. Sony's public response at the time of the introduction of the slimline PS2 (in mid-2004) was that "the more hardcore [HDD-interested] gamers...already have their PlayStation 2 units," according to a company statement.

I don't even think there is even a homebrew way of doing it.

Never knew that, you learn something new every day

So... what are your conclusions then?

My conclusions are that DSi should still be counted seperately from DS, but in the same gen. As i said earlier.

If a console/handheld has its own exclusives... for me it is a seperate platform altogether.

Then should the PS2 Slim and Phat be counted seperately?

DUHH!!!

I forgot iQue (This one was lauched in China, you can download N64 games in it on same store, really low prices for games.)

Me wants one (>'.')> (THAT you cant't do on N64)

The GC with DVd player you are talking about is the chromed one, with digital display. it really sold bad. =P

At least all the one I saw, had LCD screens built in it.

My cousins had those, I had the old one.  >_<

If you have to compromise then sure why not. But if the DSi gets many exclusive games that aren't playable on the regular DS due to graphics and gameplay with the cameras then why wouldn't it be a new generation? It offers better hardware and even a new way to controle your games, that's what the Wii did aswell. I think Nintendo is also cheap for making only a small improvement instead of the DS2 that is DS backward compatible but that's what they did.

It's a smart move because charts like vggartz like this will sum up the DS and DSi sales while it's widely known that the DSi is bought by people who already have a DS. For me that's a sign of a new generation, but to each his own.
