Forums - Sony - Does european ps3 support 110w to 240w ?

I have a mate whos moving to america and he was wondering if the european PS3 (he has a original euro 60gb.) works with the power circuits in america.

In other words the american ps3 is dual voltage and can take anything from 110w to 240w. The question I have is if it's the same with the european ps3 ? He couldn't really find any info on it which is why I ask you.

You mean volts, right?

I was under the impression that they all have universal PSUs, but then someone wrote that his German PS3 won't turn on while plugged directly into Japanese circuit.

In any case a PAL 60GB is by now almost surely past warranty period so he can just open it and see what's written on the PSU itself.

Its European 60GB, isn't it better to sell it and buy 60GB one in US? I mean BC isn't region-free. He'd still have to get PAL games.

Well, he could buy a ps2 at EU to play his ps2 games and sell his ps3 in europe to buy an slim when he arrives america. He should be able to get near 250EUR, 60gb version is really wanted now and with the exchange to EUR to US$ he can get a slim when he arrives here.

it has to

I have no idea.

I don't think anyone here uses lower than 230Volts though other than on building sites (safety reasons) so I am doubtful.

I tried my cousin's 40GB PAL PS3 on a 110volts circuit (with out even knowing) and played MGS1 with out any problems. After I discovered my mistake I plug it in a 220V line though, but I think the internal PSU accepts 100 - 240 volts, the slim's one anyway.

My 40gb PAL PS3 says 220-240v.

USA mains is 120v I believe which would probably not work. However some US homes do have both 120 and 240v supply.

Whatever answer you find on the Internet may or not apply to your friend's PS3 model. Who knows if Sony has used different power supplies at different points in time...

There are only two ways to be sure:

1- Open up the PS3 and read the power supply information.

2- Buy a voltage converter.

PS: Don't assume it's safe to try just because you'll plug it to a lower voltage than it's made for. Too low voltage can also cause problems, I think.
