Whatever answer you find on the Internet may or not apply to your friend's PS3 model. Who knows if Sony has used different power supplies at different points in time...
There are only two ways to be sure:
1- Open up the PS3 and read the power supply information.
2- Buy a voltage converter.
PS: Don't assume it's safe to try just because you'll plug it to a lower voltage than it's made for. Too low voltage can also cause problems, I think.
