Forums - Sony - Pleasantly surprised by HOME (among other things)

As of last night, I'm now an official PS3 owner.  UPS delivered my Slim last night, and I immediately ran down to my man-cave to hook it up.  I had Little Big Planet and Killzone 2 all ready to go as well as a couple of BluRay movies to watch.  After about 3 hours of gaming and taking a little sneak preview of a movie, I decided to mess around with HOME a little bit.

Now, in the past, I have been guilty of calling HOME a giant advertisement, a waste of time, etc.  But once I got in and TRIED it for myself, I was pleased.  The graphics are not as bad as everyone is saying they are.  There doesn't seem to be any anti-aliasing in any of the areas, and that is the biggest thing that drives me nuts about console graphics, but despite that, everything looks a lot crisper and cleaner than I thought it would.  The rooms actually have some interesting content in them.  The videos are not nearly as shamelessly commercial as I thought they would be.  Basically, I think if Sony would get some more done on HOME and make it a little more exciting, it could be like a much more functional 3D version of NXE on the 360.

I then started messing around with Life and all the other things bundled into the PS3.  After sort of being a PS3 hater for the last year and a half, I am really blown away by all the things it can do.  I can imagine it definitely taking a lot of time away from my 360.  However, I still feel lonely playing on my PS3.  I know you still have a friends list and all that stuff, but Xbox Live just feels more social for some reason.  Maybe it's just because it's more familiar territory for right now....I will reserve judgement on that for later as long as they add voice chat to PSN at some point.  It's really lame to not be able to talk or listen to your own music while you play.

Yeah, Sony gave everyone the OK to break the Sept. 1 street date.  Amazon shipped mine on the 25th and I had paid for 2 day shipping.  I do like the Slim a lot.  I was a little put off by the design of the original hardware and I like the simpler style of this revision.  It's smaller and thinner and looks nice in my entertainment center.

There has been some news lately about the slow disc reading for BD movies and how it's even slower on the Slim.   The Engadget review said it takes something like 26 seconds to start up a movie.  I am not finding that to be the case.  I put the Speed Racer BluRay in tonight and it took much less time than that to get up and running.  Playback looks amazing--even better than HD pay per view movies on my cable box.  I have honestly never really sat down and watched a BluRay movie until I got my PS3, and while the difference between a 1080i pay per view movie and a 1080p BluRay movie isn't huge, the jump in quality is definitely noticeable.  (I'm referring to the fact that you can definitely tell the video is compressed when you watch a pay per view movie because you see some boxy-ness during darker scenes and this is not present at all during BluRay playback.)

As far as games, I'm having a blast with Little Big Planet and Killzone 2.  I thought I would have some difficulty adjusting to the controller after 2 years on the 360, but I don't have any trouble switching back and forth.  I also forgot that my controller had the six axis thingy, so I was thrilled to be given the opportunity to use it in Killzone 2 toward the beginning of the game.

And for the kicker:  After a long PS3 session tonight, I switched over to my 360 and played some Fight Night Round 4........and got a disc read error.  I cleaned off the disc and restarted the game and everything was fine, but I have to wonder if this is the beginning of the end of my SECOND 360.  If so, I think I got my PS3 just in time.  I'll have something to play even when my 360 is off for repairs.

Anyway, I'll try to remember to add all of you guys next time I'm on PSN.
