They need to combine the story telling methods of both games. The issue with the first is that it was entirely narrated, and thus you had little character growth. The problem with the sequel is that they only focused on short encounters between characers, and provided little to no backstory. They need to have a mix of traditional cutscenes and narration in the third, or else find some other way to reincorporate the backstory into the game.
In R2 you never really knew what was going on, whereas in the first you had every conflict and the events leading up to them detailed for you by the narrator.
Killzone 2 also suffered the lack of a prevalent, overarching story. The detailed histories of the Killzone Universe on Killzone.com are quite impressive, but barely any of that made its way into the game. In the game it was mostly "OMG Helghast kill them!"

That would be nice but if I was given a choice between the two, I'd take the first game's style of narration. However that is a good point, and I would like to see that. And have them make the main character seem like an actual human rather than a warmachine. 
Hell yeah! i loved the first two, it's a shame a lot of people don't feel the same about #2 =/.
But they are great games.
Only if they bring back co-op. Never finished 2 because it lacked the feature. Danm Shame.
the 1st one was awesome, great attention to detail imo.
second one seemed very, Half assed? like it was made by a out sourced company that didnt give a shit.... just my opinion.
Hope the 3rd one returns to the high level of attention to detail of the 1st or just doesnt come out. or am i wrong here?
I'm only loking forward to it if they lose everything what they have put in R2..

I can't wait for Resistance 3 to be announced
everything about the Resistance atmosphere is amazing, the storyline is one of the best imo
for all those saying Resistance 1 had a better storyline than 2, can you explain because im confused on why you are separating Resistance 1 and 2 storylines when they are directly related
