Forums - Nintendo - Mario and his content

^Again you got to understand what he is saying. He is talking about why you enjoy a game. This happens because of intratextual influences, that is other books/films/games/stories/imagery outside the game world, that actively inspires your mind to attach positive feelings to the game because of it.

Hence me mentioning the 40 yrs of public fascination with space travel, ufo's, superman, whatever.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

This guy is trying too hard. I'm still glad I read it though, it took me right back down memory lane to some of the best times in my life.
*sheds a tear*

I look at this in a meta sense. I agree with the theory, but not the specifics.

I found some games work better for having an experience. Even some core games give me an experience.

One of the first game I played was Goonies II, and that was a cool experience, even if I needed a guide to beat it. Or recent games like RE4. It was a real treat playing it the first times (given I have three versions).

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

Psychology and sociology are not Malstrom's strong suit.
And when you are trying to explain the rationale for individuals' actions/societal actions -- which he is now trying to do -- that is the field into which you are delving.

I am Mario.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

I thought the most entertaining part was the Mario Bros. commerical. That was awesome!

Every time he trash talks Super Mario Galaxy - especially in terms of design - I ... uh.... I guess I just continue not taking him seriously as a game critic, because he isn't one.

Yeah... uh... I'm confused by it.

Since it and NSMB really hit it big.

It's like he had a fairly coherent train of thought... up until he got to the Wii and DS

Which seems to be the case for a lot of people in the industry for some reason.

Suddenly there is motion control and UP is down, down is up and left is next saturday.

Weird though since this guys thinking usually goes in the exact opposite other way of crazy when it comes to the wii.

Most of the posters seem to think his post is about diminishing some games in the Mario series, it's not. It seems to be him posting his theory about content/mythos using and applying it to Mario games (being a very recognisable, not to mention successful series).

@liquidninja, exactly. its why Dead Space is like Alien and Zelda is like LOTR and Merlin. I keep going back to thinking why i just didn't get Twilight Princess, it didn't give enough new content, that i could contextualise with my own experiences.

I got to say, Malstrom tried his best at writing this article, but fell short half-way. I was right up there with him until he hit Mario Sunshine. That game reminded me of SMB3, mainly the Sky Land and among other things. Thanks to theRebuplic for claring up what all of us thought about this article like someone else posted, we might come up with our own and different theory to help Mal out...
