I look at this in a meta sense. I agree with the theory, but not the specifics.
I found some games work better for having an experience. Even some core games give me an experience.
One of the first game I played was Goonies II, and that was a cool experience, even if I needed a guide to beat it. Or recent games like RE4. It was a real treat playing it the first times (given I have three versions).
A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.
