The EU Blog has updated to let everyone know the PSN will be down tomorrow, between 4:15pm and 9:05pm UK time.  “If you’re already signed in before the maintenance begins, however, you should be able to stay connected to the PSN servers. It is likely that you’ll be disconnected and required to sign back in once the PSN comes back up at 9:05pm, though,” says the blog.  We’re assuming this is to prep for Firmware 3.0.

I think it is likely that fw 3.0 releases tomorrow. The PS3 slim requires 3.0, and the Amazon/Gamestop Slim preorders release tomorrow.

Playstation Home is also updated on the 1st. Of course America is getting the Slim on August 24th (today) and Eric Lampel said that the update would go live the day the Slim launches. So it's possible.

it would be funny if someone bought a slim and saw that the servers are offline

Did Sony say that the Slim model requires firmware 3.0? I knew it wouldn't come already installed, but I didn't think it required it.
