Forums - Nintendo - Malstrom: Wii Hatred is about hatred of the new customers

Hatred of the new customers is a good way to frame it, i think. A lot of people are mad at Nintendo because they're reaching out to these customers, and mad at these customers for indulging them.

Malstrom nailed this one.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

I've been saying this for quite a long time. Heck; I just mentioned it again in the thread at http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=83693&page=2

And yeah, that's pretty much it, though I tend to put it in more unkind terms than Malstrom does.

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.

I usually say that there is a general attitude among people that "People are stupid and have bad taste". It's actually pretty much the same as Malstrom's argument.

And then these new customers will someday become core gamers, become snobby, and then have an even bigger snob write articles about them.

And then Nintendo will disrupt their market

I seriously doubt it would be Nintendo again.

Whatever happened to "the customer is always right"?

I agree with the title. Who didn't know this already? They hate the new customers because they are more relevant. One rule of big business is to target 70% of the population and the so called "casual gamers" are it. I think the "Hardcore" fear becoming as unimportant as those of us who like text-based adventures, 2D platformers and arcade shooters. They fear becoming the next underserved customer who gets the shit end of the stick. Just as children fear having attention shifted towards a baby sibling.

They've done it once before, with the NES, so its a pretty good chance they'll do it again at some point

Sony did it once before with the Playstation, doesn't necessarily mean they'll do it once again. The only way Nintendo could really disrupt the market is if the market was in control of another company, and at that point, I see the disruption happening by a newcomer.

I don't think that the Core gamer hates the casual gamer. I think the dislike of the Wii from the core gamer is more of a backlash. For example I have owned almost every single system that Nintendo has released in the US (NES, N64, Gameboy, GBA, GameCube, DS, and Wii) Just like most core gamers I got my Wii right at launch and I now absolutely hate my Wii. Nintendo used to make games that were amazing and imaginative, but now they are completely relying on a successful gimmick. I'm not saying that games like Wii Sports or Wii Fit don't have a place, but what happened to the days when Nintendo would release that great new IP unlike anything out there. The only games they serve up to the core gamer are old franchise re-hashes and most of the "exclusives" have been second rate me too titles that would have been more appropriately done on the other 2 consoles.
