Forums - Sony - Why is PS3 Slim so expensive in my country?

Vashyo said:
It's all thanks to the Scandinavian VAT & Nordisk film taking their cut from the price which increases the price. The 299€ price doesn't include VAT it comes on top of that (which is 22% more price here in finland at the minimum price).

Let's here from our friends in Belgium, France, Italy, Portugal, Germany, Holland and Austria first about the $299 price, because all those countries have ~20% VAT too.

PS3 slim is 200 dollars cheaper here in Australia, now it stands at 500 Aus dollars, which is roughly 415 US dollars, still expensive, but if ratio is taken into account we actually had 28.5% price cut, so can't complain I guess.

But the weired thing is the fat ones are still being sold at 700 dollars......while 500 dollars pre order posters hang right next to them........don't ask me why, I'm sure there are something smart about it that I didn't get

Before the price drop the PS3 80Gb cost typically 3990-4290 crowns here in Sweden. 1 crown = 0.099 Euro and 1 Euro=10.1 crowns, so price here of PS3 80GB has been €399-429 Euro including VAT for a long time.

You would think a €399 to €299 price drop would cut 25% off of those 3990-4290 and decrease it to 2990-3199 Crowns = €299-319, which means at least €100 drop in price.

But no, the PS3 Slim typically costs €379 Euro (3790 crowns) here in the big electronic retail chains and in stores such as Game (=GameStop), which as you can see is only a measly €20-50 price drop!

I'm pissed off. Is it the same in the rest of Europe?

EDIT: apparently the reason is that Sony has given the exclusive distributor of Playstation in Scandinavia, Nordisk Film, rights to add up to €50 to the price of PS3's in the whole Scandinavian market (and has been for many years, why PS consoles always cost more up here). But hopefully it's a temporary decision by the distributor to make money off of early adopters and later the price drop will be a full €100.

So in France, Italy, Austria, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Portugal and Greece the Slim is already priced €299, yes?
(Eastern Europe is probably pricier like it always has been)

And FYI: 1 Dollar= 7 Swedish crowns, meaning the Slim costs €540 here including VAT.

Yep, €299 here in Italy. Though I haven't actually seen one yet, the "phat" being sold out in the shop I went through yesterday.

Update: btw, law here mandates that prices are to be advertised including VAT. Here is a link anyway, showing the good old LBP 80GB bundle being sold at €299 - VAT (IVA here) and RAEE included - in the Mediaworld shops.

Actully I saw it for 2999:- Swedish Kronor or if it was 2995:- at Media markt in Jönköping today, but i`m not sure if they get their Ps3s from Nordisk film or if they somehow get it from Media markt in Germany (if thats possible). 2999:- Swedish Kronor is roughly the same as 299€, 299€ = 3150 swedish kronor, so its actully less than 299€.

Seems like the official launch pricetag here is NZD $599. That translates to USD $407. The official price for the Phat was/is somewhere in the mid to high $700s but nearly every retailer has been selling it on "special" for the last couple of months for ~$698, and in some cases that's with a game. However it seems some retailers are including the Blu ray remote with every slim sold. Launch bundles are going for about $650.

If they want to hit a sales sweet spot here it'll need to drop by a bit more yet, or there'll need to be some sweeter bundles.

We will be having it for ~US$550 so stop crying >:(

Its been talked about on several different forums across the web. And alot of people calim that you can buy the PS3 80gb for 2999SEK @ ICA Maxi. Haven't been to the one in our city so I wouldn't know. But alot of people have "confirmed" this, so i gues you ought to take a look if you really want one.

Cheers!

The Slim costs around 3200 NOK here in Norway and the phat has dropped to around 2999 NOK at online retailers. Not sure about store prices, I do all my shopping online!
There is also a bundle available here at some stores, a PS3 phat, two Blu-ray movies of free choice (from a list) and two games (also from list), all for around 3799 NOK.
That's quite a good deal here!
