Forums - Sales - NPD Predicts PS3 Sales To Increase By 40-60% After Price Drop

Oh yes it can. 299$ is the sweet spot in price.

Look at what it did to 360 sales last september... Except it will be a lot worse with 120 million PS2 owners who were waiting on the sidelines.

Sub $200 has always been the sweet spot. Not until the PS3 was sub $300 was sub $299 the sweet spot.

Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

@kowenicki : much less than 55%, we're not in typical week here with PS3 shortages. It's more like 30%, look a few weeks behind. Easily reachable with the new price and slim.

I think you'll never see the 360 in front on the PS3 in the US again after September, 1st.

@kowenicki : sales numbers and preorders tell me otherwise.

So, 50% of 75k (I know NPD is only US) is ... wait for it ... ~38k. Thus, an increase of 50% would bring sales to ~113k per week globally. That sounds right to me *after* the initial 3 week surge and before holiday sales kick in.

Basically back to where it was last year, roughly.

Both of which say nothing about sustained demand. Regardless of what every one thinks differently, we'll just have to wait and see what the short and long term impacts will be.

Historically, the sweet spot has been $199, not $299, and that hasn't been working so well for the 360 Arcade: it got a bit of a boost, but it's still getting thrashed.

Microsoft once said that 75% of a console's sales come when it falls below $200. If that's true, then we might see a boost in PS3 sales then (and if it's true the Wii is in for one hell of a ride).

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.

lol, no. $200 is the sweet spot.

That's what everyone tries to get below for consoles. $299 is what PS2 launched at.

360 did well, because it had an offering at the $199 level.

... and there are NOT 120 million PS2 owners that havn't upgraded to something by now and most of those aren't waiting for a $300 console. They're waiting for a $150 one.

Man I can't wait for things to return to normal in a couple of weeks for everyone to realize the error of "price cut will save the PS3" logic.

Its a temporary measure, not a value creator.

Hell, GT5 and FF13 will have a bigger effect on PS3 sales.

Its an expectation guys.. and it has nothing to do with the PS3 SLIM, its only to do with August numbers..

Also the PS3 had like 110K last month, so a 50% increase would push it to around 180K.

I expect the PS3 to sell 200K at the lowest for August numbers(slim is released late august), maybe brushing over 300K.

Well, i'm more worried about the longevity of the jump. Hell, they could have 1000% more sales from last week without that wouldn't mean nothing if it goes back to the same sales level one month later. Slim should give a good jump in sales and lineup to support the sales increase.

im thinking more like a 200-300% increase, it will easily sell 400 to 500 thousand systems a month at that price, it will outsell the Wii easily for at least a year, and catch the 360 in as little as 18 months, this is depending on how many systems Sony can crank out, it's gonna happen people.
