The PS2 came out in 2000 and we are in 2009...i don't understand how a gamer could have ignored the PS2 for close to 9 years when the system is often considered one of the best of all time.

I really don't get it,i got my PS2 in 2003 and even that was kinda late to the party.

I know people whom have picked up their first PS2 at the price drop to $99. I'm sure there are more.

I think he's just referring to having the emotion chip in the PS3...

They'll probably introduce PS2 downloads with emulation in a future update. This might mean that the emulation can't handle a PS2 game, but it would work with a modified PS2 game.

Companies don't just invest into emulation coding and patent it, while simultaneously having an effective means of distribution, without ever intending to use it.

Yeah, I've said it before and I'll say it again, PS2 hardware on PS3 motherboards is NOT coming back.

The mobos have already been reduced in size more than once and there simply isn't enough physical real estate for the extra chip set and next to zero incentive for SCE to even consider re-engineering the PS3 yet again in a way that would make it more expensive to produce, just to appease a small minority of consumers who have made it their mantra not to buy a PS3 until it plays their old PS2 games, assuming they even have any.

Software is the only future for the PS2 on later PS3 hardware. Whether it be through EE/GS emulation or individual recoding.

Technically, a game like Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 would be an example of a PS2 comparable game, re-tooled for HD resolutions (other than the sprites). If I was going to buy any old PS2 classic again, I'd be all for buying a revamped, recoded game for the PS3 for $15 or less, not that I see up port games like MvC2 becoming a regularity (like Puzzle Fighter and to a lesser extent, Bionic Commando Re-armed).

About the biggest advantage of PS2 BC is to allow consumers to buy a bunch of used old PS2 games at worst, and play their old library on new hardware with upscaling at best. If it's the latter, the assumption would be you already have a PS2 unless it broke and you declared you would not buy a $99 (or even cheaper used) replacement until the PS3 played them as well.

Rumour: Full PS3 backwards compatibility only weeks away

Wednesday, 01 Jul 2009 11:51
PlayStation 3

As Sony's backwards compatibility patents make the rounds, a German website has supposedly gained comment from a Sony employee.

We were quick to point out that the unearthed Sony patents for the emulation of the PS2's CPU (Emotion Engine) on the PlayStation 3 did not imply full backwards compatibility. This was for the simple fact that the PS3 had already been software emulating the Emotion Engine since early-2007 when it was ripped out of European PS3s.

However, the fact remained that the patent was filed in December 2008 with a publication date of only last week.

This brings us to the German website DemoNews.de, which claims to have gained comment from a Sony employee stating that full backwards compatibility is coming to US PS3's as a firmware update in the "next few weeks."

A European release date for the update has not yet been determined, but if there's any credibility in this news, we expect it drop at around the same time as the US update. Pinch of salt people, big pinch of frickin' salt.

Seems doubtful due to timing, but I'm still of the notion that it's only a matter of time as to when we'll be seeing PS2 games for sale on PSN (via software recoding/emulation).

Some seem determined to make an issue of there being no PS2 hardware compatibility, but to be blunt, many of these people likely never owned a PS2 in the first place, meaning they have no PS2 games and never had any intention of buying a PS3, regardless of PS2 compatibility, even if it were free.

So the "when they bring back PS2 compatibility for under $200 I'll buy one" would likely become "when it's $99 I'll buy one" which is essentially telling SCE that they don't really want these people's business at this point in the game.

That sucks, oh well there is always that option of buying a $99 ps2

Man, why is sony so dumb. This is more important to me than bluray, wifi or any of that garbage.

List of PS2 only games I want to play/replay -
God of war 2, Gradius V, DMC3, Rumble Racing, MGS3, Shadow of the colossus, Onimusha 4.

List of PS3 only games I want to play/replay for the next year-
Killzone 2, Resistance 2, Uncharted 2, Little Big Planet, God of War 3

If I had a choice of buying a Sony console it still would be PS2.

What jerks.

Guess I won't be buying a PS3 for some time until the price is sub $200.

I don't get it.

Why are they jerks? Because they wan't you to play PS3 games on the ACTUAL PS3?

Oh, such jerks they are, seriously use your head.

What would you think of your Blu-Ray player if it couldn't play the DVDs you'd spent the past 10 years building up a collection of?  It's the exact same thing - you now need two machines when one could have served the same purpose.  It's a convenience thing.

I'm glad I got a 60gb.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

Wouldn't a full b/c PS3 affect the sales of the PS2 right now? The system is on it's last leg and they want as many sales as possible for PS2 so when Sony has conferences, they can put up the number of 140M....145M etc.

They can use that for more bragging rights during E3 2010 or whatever. When the PS2 is no longer on shelves/manufactured then Sony will do something about b/c. We are about to enter arguably the very best 16 months of gaming in history. My mind is not on PS2 right now...
