Forums - Sony - PS3 Slim Uses a New Cell That Has Many Performance Improvements

"

Sony has made some enhancements under the hood to boost its processing speed and power efficiency. The gaming console will carry an upgraded version of the Cell microprocessor, which is being jointly developed by IBM, Sony, and Toshiba.

The new chip has been manufactured using an advanced 45-nanometer manufacturing process, an IBM spokesman said. Based on IBM's Power architecture, the chip delivers many performance improvements while drawing less power than earlier chips, IBM has said. The earlier console carried a Cell processor manufactured using the 65-nm process. IBM declined to provide the clock speed of the new Cell processor."

Does this mean that the games will load up faster or something?(or look a bit better on Slim comapred to fats)

if so I m selling my fat and getting a Slim

If they increase the power of teh cell any further it would asplode o_o

Yes technically that means that the ps3 will be less "laagy" for example in the XMB and etc.

im fine with the Speed now.
i just want RPGs.....

Teh Cell can withstand 1000x G forces, so you are wrong.

I'm curious about the last bit of the article and why Nvidia declined to comment on the graphics processing chip set and why details weren't made available.

I'm very interested in seeing what's changed in the new PS3 slim, the faster microprocessor sounds promising. I won't believe there's been a performance upgrade until the phat and the slim are clocked side by side though.

I hope details of the guts of a slim become readily available before it starts shipping.

I dont think the new performance will be used, why cause what are they gonna do about the old PS3?

i think they will program for fat PS3 but the slim will perform that program better.

I highly doubt it will be a different cell chip it more just looks like its gonna be a 45nm revision and nothing more despite what IBM appears to be saying. The clockspeed WILL in anycase remain at 3.2 GHz

Long Live SHIO!

I think what they're saying is that it's the same cell, but now it's doing the same thing while being smaller, using less power, and with less heat.

Maybe it could do certain things a little better, but that's it.
