wouldnt bet on it.

Care to explain why I wouldn't bet on it? AMD has already previewed DX11 hardware, and nvidias GTX300 range is speculated to be released Q4. I'd be surprised if the 300 series wasn't DX11 compatible, giving AMD such a big lead on the market.

GT300 chips went in for full production on August 3rd. TSMC takes 22 weeks to deliver working chips from that, that would put it in January for availibility. That's if nothing goes wrong. If it requires a respin (almost all chips from either company have) it's more likely February.

They might manage low quantities for the press in Decemeber, but you're not buying one until next year. AMD is still September by the way.

I'll build you a $299 PC that's faster than any 7-series era PC:

Athlon II X2 245: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103687 [$68]

Radeon HD4650: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.230952 [$80 after rebate]

AMD 760G board: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.230952 [part of above combo]

2GB DDR2 RAM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227060 [$24]

Case + ~400W PSU can be had for about $35

Vista Home Premium - $100

Total Price - $307, and you can see that 1/3 of that is the OS. If you transfer your current OS license it's a $200 PC that will outrun anythingfrom that era.

Not really.

There is no Knowledge that is not Power

With a PC which I intended to use for gaming? no I wouldn't, because I know so many of the great games coming for the PC over the next couple of years won't run on such an old machine.

But of course you're not talking about a $299 PC are you? You're talking about a certain gaming console that's recently had a price cut, for which all games released for it until the end of time will run on that $299 machine. So in reality it makes not a bit of difference how old the GPU is.

If you're saying today's PC will deliver a superior gaming experience, well weren't PC gamers saying that when PCs used the same GPU as this console? So again, what's the point?

For certain games PC kicks ass. There isn't a console game that can compare when it comes to my favourite WRPGs and RTS games. But in other areas of gaming the console has it all over the PC.

For me PCs and consoles exist in parallel universes. Sometimes I live in the console universe and other times I live in the PC universe.

The advantage of the consoles for me is that I have been able to afford the current generation console ever since getting into gaming. But I've never yet been able to afford the most up-to-date gaming rigged PC, I've always had to settle for being at least 2 steps behind, and still pay a higher price than the current gen console.

I'm surprised they didn't aim to have them out before the end of the year. Not that I'm in the market for a DX11 card any time soon, but with the hype of Windows 7, it's possible that dx11 will take off where dx10 didn't. Add on to the fact that hardcore gamers are obviously the first to jump onto the latest and greatest, a 4-5 month gap could loss them a decent amount of sales.

Then again, many of the hardcore pc gamers I know are the biggest fanboys, and the nvidia fanboys wouldn't buy an AMD even if it was going to be 12 months for nvidia to get a DX11 card out...

that's not true, TONS of people jumped from an nvidia card to an HD4000 card. That is if the steam survey thing is correct.

nice comparison.... though one could play modern warfare 2 with the exact same quality using the computer that has been at 200 for a while now...

and you forget that you can do so much more with a PC...

But yeah if you're interested in BR, the PS3 is probably an equivalent deal to the 360 now, price wise.

It was the other way round with DX10. G80 launched in November; Vista launched in January and then R600 launched in February and was slower. Even though it was good value, you can see from the Steam survey that there are 10x as many 8x00 cards out as HD2x00. So it does make a difference.

a PC ? no.. my pc is better than that.

A ps3 yes.

A pc with the specs of a ps3 capable of everything the ps3 is including playing all ps3 games ? yes.

Check out my game about moles ^

Pretty stupid post as it is obviously just a dig at the PS3 and consoles in general.

A modern machine for the equivalent price will play anything you chuck at it well. That will be for years to come. What will slow you down is you will not be able to necessarily play all the newest DX11 games in all the glory that was expected.

I remember back in the day at a TFC LAN party watching a guy playing TFC at 640 and owning everyone. So although aesthetically things have come a long way basically if the gameplay was their in the first place it is irrelevant what level of AA or resolution is, as they are nice to have.

What you get with the 360 and the PS3 is that games will always deliver as the same peak performance for all owners regarless of the purchase date (well that is how it stand currently but I suspect this too will not always be true).
