After making quite a few predictions and even a few I'm not allowed to mention anymore, lol,  I would like to make what I consider to be my boldest prediction yet.  I think Nintendo will unveil their next generation handheld in 2010.  They will primarily be releasing it in response to the success of the Apple Touch and Phone lines and the PSP Go which is continuing to show technologically marvelous games like the upcoming GT PSP and MGS Peacewalker and will also get quite a boost from its digital comics service which will shock many with how successful it becomes.

    The GBA was a very successful handheld during its 3 year reign as King of the Handhelds (selling at least 60 million units ltd Edit 80 million -- according to Nintendo Power's 20th Anniversary retrospective published earlier this year), and The DS has during its 6 years been one of the most successful consoles ever made.  But, I think the DS line has seen the release of its ultimate game in DQIX, and that Nintendo will bring out the next evolution of their handheld gaming systems in the very near future.

The GBA broke 80 million.

I could see an outside chance of them unveiling their next handheld at E3 2010, with an '11 release date, but given that DS is set to have one of its best years ever, I think it'll wait until 2011 to unveil it at all.

But they just released the DSi. It seems a bit early.

buuuuzzzzzzz, wrong. Maybe you missed the boat, but Nintendo domination isn't from responding to an opponent and competing with it. It's been by understanding what the consumer doesn't have and not competing with current products. If a product evolves to compete that's different.

Iwata said that in their opinion Wii and DS can double their userbase...for Wii likely, for DS I see this as a "not another handheld for more than 1 year"...why stop the DS from being so great now?

Bold, indeed. I can't imagine you being correct on this one.

they had a handheld ready to be launched just recently and decided not to launch it because Wii and DS are still selling very well.

Yeah Iwata stated that at the moment there are 150 million people that say they may buy a Nintendo platform in the future.

I do not think Nintendo will announce another DS until 2012.. Isn't this year like the DS's best year in terms of sales so far? It'll be a while before they have to release another system.
