I think everyone should know that these figures are not useful for seeing how profitable the Xbox by itself is. These numbers messure each segment as a whole and not their individual products. It would be very hard to get any specific data pertaining to any of those product/services separately. You're welcome to try though.

BTW...I'm not sure i understand your charts...specifically...

Operating incomes for 2008 and 2009...where are you getting those figures from?

I have my sources listed at the bottom of the post. I'll try to make them more straightforward in a little bit. If you need anymore help feel free to PM me.

LOL. Goes to show you that they are not a consumer driven business.

True the failure rate of 50% is debatable but

if you actually read microsofts reports
they state in the most recent quarter
Entertainment and Devices Division 2009 apr-june they lost $130million,
in the 3 months before that they lost $31million

therefore you must agree when people post the xbox is now making a nice profit they must also be posting 'with a straight face' ;)

All bow to me the VGChartz current reigning 3DS prediction champion

Bet with tbone51: Pokeon X & pokemon Y will not sell more than 8 million in 2013

July 2009 daveJ saidTrue the wii has a large lead now but by 2017 the most likely result will be 1. ps3 2. xbox360 3. wii <-- wii's successor launched in 2011 effectively killing sales of the wii

They didn't necessarily make money on Xbox, EDD contains other things, are there more detailed break downs for the last year.

M$ has lost a lot of money overall though

All companies are losing in the current times.

@ inverted, firstly this is is the last 11 years, and secondly Nintendo? And did Microsoft or Sony as a whole lose money?

I don't know if the console market can even be profitable even when your rooted in it. Just look at Sony, for all their previous successes they are currently at the bottem, you might aruge that they will get back on top but they should have already been reaping the fruits of their labor. All it takes is one gimmick and a famous brand name. Microsoft now has the name (even though it needs to clean up it's reputation) and they are getting the gimmick. But seeing these numbers from both Microsoft and Sony I fear that next gen they won't show us a great graphic jump but instead offer us gimmick consoles like the Wii. What ever happens I think it's clear that a forth player won;t enter the ring, it would take some serious tallent, know-how and capital to do that. Only EA (exclusives), Apple (fame), Nvidia (technology) or Dell (technology) might have a shot but seeing Microsoft numbers I doubt they are interested.

@ grey21, M$ do not have the brand name that Sony have, Xbox consoles have sold 50-60m, PS consoles had sold like 270m coming into this gen. With the state of modern graphics, how much more power do they need. Enough to get to 1080p 60 fps in every game, but there won't be the same jump in power next gen, but it can still be profitable
