Forums - Sony - Sony Explain Why The PS3 Slim Has No Backwards Compatibility

I hope those 10% who are buying it to play their PS2 games aren't too disappointed when they put GoW II in the slot and it doesn't play.

Their "research" asked a particular question and they used the answer for a totally unrelated purpose. Shameful but typical of corporate PR double talk (not just Sony btw).

Now if they asked buyers "would you pay and extra $50 if we included b/c in the PS3 slim?" and they got 80-90% saying "no" or "probably not" then they would have a good justification for not doing it. Personally I probably would have paid an extra $50 if there was a b/c sku. I probably wouldn't stretch to $100, though I'd be sorely tempted.

They are still peddling the same weak bullshit. We all know the legitimate reason why the feature was removed from the system. Doing so allowed them to remove components, and thus reduce the cost. They could also get more value for the components in its original format in the older system. Sony has listed off a dozen justifications for this that have nothing to do with the truth.

I also think it is time that some people on these forums accept the truth. The feature isn't going to come back, and as time passes Sony probably isn't going to keep manufacturing the needed chips. Once the PS2 sales die off there will no longer be a need to produce the chips. For those claiming the panacea of software emulation will save the day. You are woefully misguided. Emulation is not a massively complex task. Going on two years now if it were possible it would have been done.

The hardware in the PS3 is just too radically different from the PS2. The Cell cannot perform the functions that the Emotion engine was capable of. Sony had PS2 hardware in the PS3 for a good reason. Were the PS3 capable of doing the job with just software Sony would have saved a lot of cash for themselves and used emulation. Well they didn't and that is because they couldn't.

Really it is painfully simple deductive logic. You don't need to be Sherlock Holmes to puzzle this one out.

Somewhere between the time Sony removed backwards compatibility from the previous PS3, and we knew there'd be a new PS3, people got to hoping that the feature would be brought back in the PS3 Slim. It hasn't.

Put a PS2 disc into the PS3 Slim and it won't play. Which for some will mean nothing, but for others, will mean a great deal. If that's you, and you're after an explanation, SCEA's director of marketing John Koller has one.

"Now that we're at a point where we're three years into the lifecycle of the PS3," he told us earlier today, "there are so many PS3 disc-based games that are available that we think — and noticed this from our research — that most consumers that are purchasing the PS3 cite PS3 games as a primary [reason]".

"And it's not just like 50 or 60 percent. It's well into the 80 or 90 percentile range who are purchasing it for PS3 [games]. We do know that there are next gen consumers wanting to come over the the PS3. Most of those are consumers who have not utilized their PS2 for a little while and they're ready to jump into the PlayStation 3."

Shame. A predictable shame, but a shame nonetheless.

Fair enough

If the PR person said this, then need to be taken back to remedial school.

Not because of what they said but how they said it. The use of percentile here is incorrect. If you cannot use proper terms, then you cannot truly be trusted. (It should have been the 80 to 90 percent range).

I play so many PS2 games it's not funny.

I mean, I still have a PS2, but why play it on that when I can make 50 memory cards right there on the console.

If BC makes a comeback it will be the 250GB model $399. If not BC (PS2) will only be software based. By the time they have achieved full BC, PS4 is already released 2014. Software emulation is a pain in the ass and not a high priority.

Well it would be convenient if your PS2 craps out on you...

But if you don't already own a PS2...why don't you?

Exactly. I don't understand why anyone would not want a PS2.

I couldn't really care less how cheap a PS2 is - i dont plan to get one (believe it or not, i can do quite a bit with 100 US), and i dont plan to get a PS3 until BC is back in. I'm in no rush to play these great games on the PS3 (of which i only care for roughly 4 or so), so i'll sit and wait - if it means no PS3 for me this generation ill wait for a BC PS4. i never owned a PS2 (only played at other people's houses) so BC is kinda important to me.

um..stuff

@Distant Star

Most emulators are developed by hobbyists most of whom have little to no training. You can even develop emulation software through trial and error. It is hardly hard work as software development goes. Both Microsoft and Nintendo have emulation software that covers hundreds of titles. How is it then if its so tedious that these two actually allocate resources to do this. How many titles does Nintendo emulate every year. How many titles did Microsoft make backward compatible.

This is hardly the convoluted chore you make it out to be. The only reason Sony wouldn't do this is that they cannot do it. Simple enough right there. They don't need to be excused, and frankly they don't need to be condemned either. It was a financial choice. Cheaper hardware was more important then backward compatibility. I doubt you will find anyone that will disagree. The PS3 cost too much with that added hardware.

Lets not just write this off as unimportant, and not worth having. They just couldn't afford to have it. Some shit doesn't need to be bleached out of existence. Every manufacturer has skid marks. You take the bad with the good.

Maybe Nintendo and Microsoft are putting more effort into BC. This doesn't mean their BC is perfect, again software emulation takes a lot of time. In the end PS2 games will be BC as for all Xbox games. So if it takes time to have good BC, don't bother waiting. Buy a PS3 and play PS1 and PS3 games. When PS4 is released you will be able to PS2 games.

I also believe that BC is a psychological issue. It makes gamers comfortable knowing that they still can play their old games. While hardly anyone does.

BC is still a great feature, although it's the last feature on a "to do list". You're making gamers happy for the reason above. And offer a solution for the hassle of hooking up your PS2, less space is needed and it's great if your PS2 has died.

Again BC is a great feature, "but I'm not going to buy a PS3 because it hasn't BC". It feels like only PS2 games justify purchasing a PS3. What about PS3 games?

Sony has to improve, but gamers have to clear their minds. They have a PS2 library and yet they don't want to buy a PS3 they know what it's capable of.

This is my analysis: You wait and BC doesn't come.. so no PS3 for you or just buy it but keep your PS2 games because eventually...
