Maybe Nintendo and Microsoft are putting more effort into BC. This doesn't mean their BC is perfect, again software emulation takes a lot of time. In the end PS2 games will be BC as for all Xbox games. So if it takes time to have good BC, don't bother waiting. Buy a PS3 and play PS1 and PS3 games. When PS4 is released you will be able to PS2 games.
I also believe that BC is a psychological issue. It makes gamers comfortable knowing that they still can play their old games. While hardly anyone does.
BC is still a great feature, although it's the last feature on a "to do list". You're making gamers happy for the reason above. And offer a solution for the hassle of hooking up your PS2, less space is needed and it's great if your PS2 has died.
Again BC is a great feature, "but I'm not going to buy a PS3 because it hasn't BC". It feels like only PS2 games justify purchasing a PS3. What about PS3 games?
Sony has to improve, but gamers have to clear their minds. They have a PS2 library and yet they don't want to buy a PS3 they know what it's capable of.
This is my analysis: You wait and BC doesn't come.. so no PS3 for you or just buy it but keep your PS2 games because eventually...

If you don't mind some glitches.
